WALT reflect on ways religion contributes to the identity of believers.

As part of their learning students explored what a religion is. After an intial brainstorm, a jigsaw activity and some research, they came up with an agreed upon a class definition:

'A religion is a set of beliefs and traditions that are often based upon written or oral text. They are practised by different communities and faiths. They often follow one or more superhuman-like figures.'

The next learning task the students will complete is writing and recording a podcast style interview with a pair of experts on a world religion. The twist being that they had to undertake the research in order to become these experts. The six religions that will be researched are:

  • Islam
  • Buddhism
  • Hinduism
  • Judaism
  • Taoism
  • Sikkhism

As a class they also decided on what information to include in the podcast. This includes:

  • Origins/History
  • Teachings/Beliefs
  • Branches/Denominations
  • Rules/Laws
  • Symbols
  • Festivals/Celebrations
  • Places of Worship
  • Leaders
  • Book/s
  • What does worship look like

Sunday Gospel

The liturgy of the Catholic Church provides a framework for reflection which is used by Catholics throughout the world. Each week in the Newsletter, you will find the Sunday Gospel as well as some discussion questions to have with your child/ren.

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke
The people stayed there before the cross watching Jesus. As for the leaders, they jeered at him. ‘He saved others,’ they said, ‘let him save himself if he is the Christ of God, the Chosen One.’ The soldiers mocked him too, and when they approached to offer him vinegar they said, ‘If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself.’ Above him there was an inscription: ‘This is the King of the Jews.’

One of the criminals hanging there abused him. ‘Are you not the Christ?’ he said. ‘Save yourself and us as well.’ But the other spoke up and rebuked him. ‘Have you no fear of God at all?’ he said. ‘You got the same sentence as he did, but in our case we deserved it: we are paying for what we did. But this man has done nothing wrong. Jesus,’ he said, ‘remember me when you come into your kingdom.’ ‘Indeed, I promise you,’ he replied, ‘today you will be with me in paradise.’
