Year 7 2023
Transition Underway
Greater Shepparton Secondary College has been abuzz with new faces over the past few weeks as we’ve continued our transition visits from local primary schools. These soon-to-be familiar faces, make up just some of our Year 7 classes for 2023. This is both an exciting and nerve-racking time for our youngest students as they transition into secondary schooling. Our transition visits, which began in Term 3 and will continue throughout Term 4, are designed to make things a little less daunting as students are introduced to the college teaching and support staff and get a feel for the campus and a typical day here at GSSC. Each student also receives a $20 voucher towards their Greater Shepparton Secondary College Uniform, from the Uniform Shop in Corio Street.
A visit from Bourchier Street Primary School started with an session in the bleachers with an interactive ‘How well do you know GSSC?’ quiz designed by our student leaders. This was followed by ‘Q&A time’ where our new students were able to ask questions of our student leaders about GSSC and the transition from primary to secondary school. Our incoming Year 7’s then became scientists when our wonderful Science Teacher and 7-9 Kiewa House Leader, Julie Natalizio took the group through an experiment looking at how the different types of animal coverings, including fur, feathers, scales or skin hold warmth.
Bourchier St student, Blayke Hodgson, said he “can’t wait” to begin secondary school next year. “I’m looking forward to woodwork and cooking – mum reckons I make a pretty good cook,” he said. Kade Taylor said he was also looking forward to woodwork classes, as well as photography, while Sienna Nobles-Laird is hoping to create a pathway to become to a marine biologist or an artist. “I’m most excited about discovering new possibilities for my future,” she said.
We would like to thank our Student Leadership students who have assisted in running our transition sessions, helping the students with activities and answering questions. These students have been wonderful role models and ambassadors for GSSC. Our Multicultural Liaison Officers, Koorie Educators and Wellbeing staff have also supported the sessions and thank you to the teachers and Education Support staff who have hosted sessions showcasing our art, music, cooking, science, dance and sport programs.
We cannot wait to welcome students from our remaining local schools over the course of the week and have all Year 7 2023 students onsite together at the Statewide Orientation Day on Tuesday 13 December. We will be here to support our new students and families every step of the way!
