Year 10 students

All Year 10 students who applied to go to GoTafe to study a VET subject in 2023 will have been sent a BKSB test to complete. This email would be found on both the parents and students email and if you find nothing please check your junk mail by searching for GoTafe. This test must be completed as soon as possible and accesses the student’s numeracy and literacy skills. If you aren’t sure and have questions regarding the test contact your Careers Practitioner.

Dorevitch Pathology visit

This week eleven Year 10 students visited the Dorevitch Pathology clinic in Shepparton to find out what it is like to be a medical scientist. Sam spoke about the careers available to students in the field and explained what tests were conducted at the laboratory. Hopefully the visit has inspired some of our students to pursue these careers in the future.

Year 8 students

Just a reminder to check your postal mail for the My Career Insights form. This form is required for all Year 8 students to be signed by a parent or guardian and allows the student to participate in Morrisby Profiling in 2023.

The form needs to be returned to the student’s House office or Careers Practitioner.  My Career Insights is a new program for all Year 9 students in government secondary schools. This program will help your child to:

• learn about what skills and abilities they could bring to a job

• find out about what jobs match their abilities, interests and personality, and the subjects they need for those jobs

As part of the program, your child will:

• complete a series of online questions and quizzes (on the Morrisby Profile website) at school

• receive a Morrisby Profile Report showing the results from the questions and quizzes, and possible jobs that match their abilities, interests and personality

• have a 30 minute meeting with an accredited career advisor, who will explain the report to your child. You can attend this meeting. Please tell the school if you need a telephone interpreting service.

If your child does not participate in the program, or does not complete the questions and quizzes, a Morrisby Profile Report will not be created for them.

INTERESTED IN TAKING A GAP YEAR?

What is a Gap Year?

Traditionally a Gap Year was taken by Year 12 students who deferred their university studies for 12-months. Now Gap Years are taken by students who would like to delay their TAFE or university studies or apprenticeships.

What are the benefits of taking a Gap Year?

There are many benefits for young people – the following are a few:

*Financial: save money to fund future study/training.

*Career development: complete a traineeship, TAFE course, volunteering etc., before starting university studies. This may improve your graduate employment prospects and give you practical employment skills.

*Take a break: if you’re feeling burnt out from study, taking a break may be beneficial for your mental wellbeing.

*Give you time to firm up your future goals: if you’re feeling unsure about your study or training plans, a gap year may give you time to explore your goals, attend open days, participate in work or training related to your interests, and give you more time to make sure the course or training you want to do in the future is right for you.

Employment

With the summer holidays coming up, now is the perfect time to start applying for jobs. There are several methods for finding employment. The following explores three.

1. Cold Calling

Did you know that many jobs aren’t advertised? These employers rely on word of mouth and /or contact people who drop in resumes to their business. This is called ‘cold calling’. What does this mean for you? It means you have to be:

Be Proactive

Get your resume and cover letter together, use/buy/borrow a smart outfit and hit the streets. Employers love young people who demonstrate initiative and independence.

Be Organised

Ask someone to go over your resume to look for spelling and grammatical errors. Ensure it is formatted correctly and no more than 2-pages. Be careful of using online resume builders as often the formatting looks poor. Youth Central has excellent sample resumes, www.youthcentral.vic.gov.au

Be Engaged

Let everyone know you are looking for casual employment. Word of mouth is a powerful tool to finding a job. Contact the referees on your resume to let them know they may receive calls from employers.

2. Register with businesses

Some businesses allow prospective employees to register with their organisation and apply for jobs advertised on their website. Access a list of casual job links to get started via https://slmcareerresources.edublogs.org/

3. Search for advertised jobs

Apart from the links above, the following websites are great to bookmark and check regularly

Also check the classified section in your local newspaper!
