Killara Academy

Killara Academy students were privileged to hear a presentation by Dr Martine Perkins BVSc (Syd Hons) MANZCVS MRCV, Senior Veterinarian and owner of The Village Vet.

Martine explained that she had always liked animals and was good at Science at school. She worked hard at her subjects at Sydney University and received an Honours degree. She chose to work in the UK which she really enjoyed, where she undertook further training and travelled. She specialised in small animal medicine and became a medical registrar. She opened her first clinic in West Pymble and then her second clinic in East Killara. She now has 25 staff and has won a Small Business Award.

Every day is varied with her work including consultations, pathology, surgeries, radiology, ultrasound, dentistry, chemotherapy, emergencies and writing up cases. She is supported by the amazing nurses in her two clinics.

One student volunteered for a BP test and blood oxygenation monitoring. Martine demonstrated CPR on an animal model showing both assisting breathing and cardiac compressions. Some problems vets encounter include mental health issues and the emotional toll of caring for their patients.

There are long hours but she has a supportive staff team to help her. Martine’s energy and incredible knowledge impressed all of us. We are grateful she gave her time to our Killara Academy students.
