Wantirna College's Intermediates had a successful couple of days at EMR Cricket, with the girls finishing second in the region and the boys coming home as regional champions!
The Intermediate boys cricket took it to Vermont in the Final, with a State Championship berth (the first for Wantirna in cricket since 2014) all down to the last ball.
Vermont needed 6 off a single delivery but a beautiful ball from Jackson Edwards sealed Wantirna’s fate. Lachlan Payne opened the batting, setting the boys up strong, with Luke George steadying the ship in the middle of the order. Max Taylor took some influential early wickets, getting the boys off to a good start in the second innings and an unbelievable catch by Jamie Gilchrist got the boys excited and their heads in the game. Brayden Mayoh and his exceptional glovework was not lost in the accolades, really providing a solid base for our bowlers.
Special mention to Logan Bell who was also fantastic out in the field, directing and setting up plays. Mr Mason and his assistant coaches, Josh Hobbs and Daniel Meehan, are beyond proud of how far this team have come and are super keen to play in the State Finals over the coming weeks.
The girls team with shared coaches, Ms Shaw and Mr Mooney, showed exceptional development from their first training session to their final match, with a beautiful match played against Brentwood in the first EMR round.
Unfortunately the girls fell short upon playing a skilled Mt Waverley who bowled us out – 50 off 19 overs. Pareena Varsani took a fantastic caught and bowled wicket, while Hailey went straight through the stumps getting Wantirna’s only 2 wickets. Massive congratulations to all the girls, particularly Hailey Buckley who batted and survived the whole 19 overs. In coming a close second, Wantirna is immensely proud of the girls’ efforts.
Basketball is done and dusted for 2022! After putting up great fights across all basketball divisions, both Ms McMahons Intermediate Boys and Ms Brottos Intermediate Girls were undefeated up until their Grand Finals, both against Box Hill Basketball Academy. While our teams put it to them, it was unfortunately unmatched.
Ms Brotto and Ms McMahon are super impressed with both teams’ dedication, ferocity and behaviour, both on and off court, and can’t wait to coach these teams in the coming years.
Congratulations to both the Intermediate Boys and Girls on being runners up at this year’s EMR Basketball competition.
Victoria’s first State School Athletics in 3 years was held on Monday 17 October at Lakeside Stadium in Albert Park. Wantirna had two talented students – Hailey Buckley and Will Caira make it through to this competition with Will competing in the U/18s 200m Dash and Hailey competing in the U/15s 200m Dash, 400m Run, Long Jump and Triple Jump.
Hailey medalled in 3 of her 4 events coming 2nd in the 200m Dash with a time of 27.37 secs and 3rd in both Long and Triple Jump with best jumps of 4.73m and 10.39m, respectively. Will placed 5th in his event with a time of 24.78 secs.
Congratulations to both Hailey and Will for this massive achievement. Wantirna can’t wait to see what is ahead for these two young competitors.
Wantirna would like to formally congratulate Year 11 Student Paige Burrows on her selection in the Melbourne Boomers WNBL side as a development squad player. This is a massive achievement and Wantirna couldn’t be prouder of Paige’s achievement. All the best for the future Paige!
