Term 4 in the Library means an increasing number of students coming in to study, waiting for an exam to start, celebrating and debriefing after an exam, and getting those assignments finished. Even during busy lunchtime sessions there is always a quiet room waiting for anyone who needs some time to study or do schoolwork. Also, English Boost is available after school every Thursday in the Library, with English teachers available for anyone who needs some extra help.
Term 4 is also the time to make sure that Library loans are up to date. All students have received at least one reminder this term of their outstanding loans. Many still have books that were taken home over the various lockdown periods in previous years – please encourage your students to check the books they have on loan via the Library catalogue (use the star dropdown list in Compass). Once signed in, they need to hover over their name in the top right hand corner to see a list of options, and choose Loans. They can now see everything they have on loan and if it is overdue. There are no penalties for returning overdue books
The Wantirna College Library was dedicated in 2007 to the memory of Christine Horvath for her outstanding contribution to State Education. The dedication plaque was taken down during the recent Library renovations, but is now back up near the display screen. For those people who didn’t have the good fortune to know Christine, the following is a brief biography of the impact she made in her time at Wantirna College.
Christine was a much loved and highly respected teacher, Head of Junior School, and Transition Coordinator at Wantirna College from 1999 until her tragic passing in October 2005 after a courageous battle with cancer.
By the end of just her first semester at Wantirna College, the Junior students had quickly grown to love, trust and respect her. Christine initiated many programs in the Junior School with great enthusiasm whilst also forming strong bonds with parents and the wider community.
As students progressed through the College, many would call by Christine’s office at lunch time or recess just to have a chat with her as she had always showed a real interest in every one of them. Christine made the students feel special; she was patient and never gave up in believing in them.
She was such a positive person, always encouraging staff and students to do their best, never taking personal credit for anything she did, always sharing this with others. She believed in academic excellence, which she displayed not only in her own classroom as a passionate and dynamic English teacher, but in all she did around the school.
Christine’s legacy will never be forgotten by the many students and staff who she has had such a positive influence on. They will all be the better for having had the privilege of knowing her.
