This term, Year 11 students attended a chemistry excursion to KIOSC. They analysed environmental water samples looking for possible contaminant compounds from local mining and pharmaceutical companies. They used colorimetry with UV-visible spectroscopy and atomic absorption apectra (AAS) to identify any metal ion contaminants and calculate their concentration.
Using gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GCMS) and infrared they analysed the environmental water samples to identify contaminant organic compounds. Students then prepared a set of standard solutions over a concentration range and analysed them using High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). They then constructed a calibration curve which they used to determine the concentration of the contaminant organic compounds.
