Junior basketballers give regionals their best shot

The Year 5/6 division 1 regional basketball team.

The College proudly entered a team in the Year 5/6 and Year 3/4 regional basketball tournaments. Played across one weekend, the tournaments brought together teams from southern primary schools vying for the right to play in the state tournament in Launceston.

Year 5/6 tournament

The Year 5/6 team courageously took on the challenge of division 1, knowing they would come up against a very experienced, quality Corpus Christi team. Although the competition was strong, our team continued to push themselves to improve with each game, which they did.

The team took it right to the end on both games against Dominic College, only narrowly losing, and were unfortunate to not come away with a win over the two-day competition. With only three teams in the division, the girls played each team twice with Corpus taking out the championship undefeated.

This was a display of resilience at its very best and each player should be commended for the way they represented St Mary's College, their 'never give up' attitude and willingness to keep fighting. It was an absolute honour to support and celebrate this team.

Well done to the students for continuing to improve and having such a great team spirit.

Congratulations to the team members: Ashlee Bowden, Ellie Bowerman, Alvie Browning, Heidi Hancock, Dotty French, Charlotte Pritchard and Summer Richardson.

Thank you to Jarrod Browning for taking on the role of coach and umpire, as well as Cale and Tate Browning for assisting with umpiring.

Year 3/4 tournament

Our Year 3/4 team were a team of pocket rockets! What they didn't have in size they certainly made up for in grit and determination. They were delightful to watch and the improvement in every game was apparent. The team narrowly missed out on third position and were very gallant in defeat, finishing a credible fourth in the competition.

Coached by Daniel McKenzie and David Richardson, the team was made up of:  Zoey Brown, Macey Hayes, Giselle Knaj, Quinn McKenzie, Annabelle Pritchard, Amber Richardson, Lottie Stride and Lottie Zabel.

The commitment that Jarrod, Fiona, Daniel and David made to coaching these teams cannot go without mention. Regular training sessions in the lead up and then a full weekend commitment during the tournament is a big ask and is so appreciated by the College and involved families. A very big thank you to you all!

Interschool athletics

Our Junior College athletics team recently competed in the STCPSSA and JSSATIS athletics carnivals. The conditions on each day could not have been anymore different. Our athletes have battled chilly and windy conditions, and last Thursday, hot and sunny weather. Despite the differing temperatures, the College spirit shone through each and every athlete, and they participated with gusto, pride, and enthusiasm — such great representatives of our College.

Regardless of placings, all athletes should be extremely proud of their accomplishments. Well done!
