Leadership Report

Some more farewells

As many you would have noticed through the media, there is a significant shortage of teachers across our system. What this has meant though, is that our industry has provided a tremendous opportunity for teachers to make decisions about career moves to enhance the quality of their lifestyle or to seek promotion. This is what we are seeing this year at Aberfeldie. We have a number of staff who will be leaving Aberfeldie at the end of this year to seize this unique opportunity.

Please join me in congratulating the following staff members who will be taking on new opportunities in 2023.

Scott Burns - Mr. Burns has secured a promotion to a numeracy learning specialist position at Seabrook Primary. The added bonus for Scott is that his commute has been shaved in half to be closer to his family. Well done Scott.

Tenille Cann - Ms. Cann has seized a wonderful opportunity to work at Edgars Creek Primary, a new school much closer to her home. Great chance to help contribute to the creation of a new school community.

Emily Lidgerwood - Miss Lidgerwood has finalised arrangements for a visa to go and teach in the UK. Such an exciting opportunity for Emily and we wish her all the best on this exciting adventure.

Mark Polycarpou - Mr Poly is also taking advantage of open boarders and embarking on an epic journey to Europe for a big chink of the year. Safe travels.

We also have Emma Beckett, who is not technically leaving us but has been successfully appointed to a new role within the school. In 2023, Ms. Beckett will become our Inclusion and Intervention Learning Specialist. Emma Beckett will join Emma Sprakel (I know - too many Emmas to keep track of) as our second learning specialist.

With a number of weeks to go in the year, there is every chance that we may have more announcements. These will most likely come through Compass.

So hopefully you are still keeping count, this means we have 6x classroom teacher positions opened for 2023 (which includes Michelle Apollonio's position). We have been working hard behind the scenes on recruitment. Thankfully, due to the wonderful reputation of the quality of our school's learning community, we have been fortunate to recruit a number of guns to Aberfeldie. We cannot wait to make some formal introductions in the coming weeks.

2022 NAPLAN Results

The 2022 national NAPLAN data released earlier this Term shows Victoria performed strongly at the primary level, ranked first or second in eight out of 10 domains. Aberfeldie’s results reflected this and have stood out at both a State and School Network level. Despite a turbulent few years of remote learning and lockdowns, the students managed to achieve some results above and beyond those of the past 5 years. These results included:

  • 79% of Year 3, & 71% of Year 5 students being above the expected level in Reading.Overall, 99% of students met national reading standards.
  • 59% of Year 3, & 40% of Year 5 students being above the expected level in Writing. Overall, 98% of Students met national writing standards.
  • 47% of Year 3, & 47% of Year 5 students being above the expected level in Numeracy. Overall, 95% of students met national numeracy standards.

The above results are a testament to the students, school staff and families who worked incredibly hard over the past few years to ensure that each child's learning continued.

2023 Foundation Orientation Sessions

On Wednesday 2nd November, we welcomed our 2023 Foundation students for their final transition session, and we held a 2023 Foundation Parent Information Session.

We welcomed 55 new Foundation students during the three transition sessions. It was great to meet these future students and introduce them to our school, the classroom setting and their future peers. It was fabulous to see how much their confidence and independence increased throughout the sessions. We can’t wait to welcome them at the start of 2023!
