Social and emotional Curriculum

I have had the pleasure of hearing and seeing our students work really hard to improve their reading.  At Roxy, we work on learning to read and reading to learn.  We need skills to be able to recognise and understand words and lots of practice!!!

It is just as important to practice by reading for pleasure to help us  stick at something that can be hard.  Parents have a vital role in reading.  Support from adults comes in many forms and should be also in your home language and or English.  Parents support kids by having books in the house, reading together with their kids and talking about what they are reading or learning.

Reading is a great way to also help us to regulate our emotions and behaviours.  It helps our executive function vital for study and learning at higher levels of schooling.  It also helps our working memory which helps us to hear, understand and follow instructions.

So when I started out to tell you about social skills I bet you didn’t think I was going to talk about learning to read😊

There are many other things that you do at home that support children to build the 5 social skills they need thrive. (self-awareness, self-management, responsible decision-making, relationship skills and social awareness).

Parents and school can build strong connections that reinforce students’ social and emotional development. Families and caregivers are children’s first teachers and bring deep expertise about their development, experiences, culture, and learning needs. These insights and perspectives are critical to informing, supporting, and sustaining SEL efforts.  We use the zones of regulation a school to support children to recognise what state their emotions are sitting in and to talk about strategies to move to the Green zone or self-regulation.  For our age group of students many find that they need adults to help them co-regulate.
