Writing

CURRICULUM FOCUS

This week in Writing the students will be continuing our narrative unit; by banning the boring information from our narratives.

VOCABULARY

Narrative writing: A piece of writing that focuses on telling a story. Narratives have characters and a setting as well as a narrator who tells the story.

Ban the boring: A writing technique to make writing more interesting. Writers leave out everyday activities such as sleeping, eating, walking and catching a bus. If it's not interesting, we leave it out!

ACTIVITIES YOU CAN DO AT HOME TO SUPPORT YOUR CHILD'S LEARNING

Here is an example of banning the boring:

Before

I woke up late in the morning. I quickly ate some toast and drank some orange juice. After that I said goodbye to my mum and rushed to meet my friend Finn at his house. Finn lived on a farm. We didn’t know what to do so we walked around for a bit. It was fun but then a bull chased us. We got away but it was scary.

After

Walking through a paddock, Finn and I heard a strange snorting. We slowly turned around and saw a huge angry bull glaring at us and stomping its foot. Horrified, it was then that I realised I was wearing my bright red hoodie. ‘RUN!’ yelled Finn. We tore across the paddock followed closely by the angry bull. In a single leap, we both cleared the stone wall. Landing flat on our backs onto the other side gasping, we were safe!

Have your child ban the boring with this piece of writing:

One day there was a dog called Scrappy. Scrappy lived in a place called Dog Village. Scrappy was playing peacefully with his friends when suddenly six dog catchers came. The dog catchers had nets. Scrappy and his friends were trapped! Scrappy and his friends would get caught. Scrappy saw a gap between two of the dog catchers and he got away.
