We look forward to another exciting term full of fun, learning and growth for all our students.

We will continue to revise the sounds and Heart Words previously taught. Students will continue to practice segmenting and blending words. We will make predictions before, during and after reading a story. We will revise different types of punctuation. We will be focusing on writing a recount of our holidays and drawing detailed illustrations.
MATH:
Week 1: Patterns and Time – Sequencing Days of The Week
Week 2: Recognising Australian Coins and Time – Connecting Familiar Events to Days of the Week
INQUIRY: Creatures Great ad Small
Week 1: Introducing our new topic and looking at the things our pets must have to survive.
Week 2: Investigating life cycles through a Hatching Chicks experience.
On Monday 17th July we have eggs and baby chicks arriving from Henny Penny Hatching. Students will have the opportunity to see live chicks hatch from eggs, care for the chicks and watch how they grow and change over two weeks. Families have the opportunity to adopt the chicks in groups of two or more at the end of the two weeks on Friday July 28th. Information on adopting chicks will be included in the school Newsletter. Please contact somerville.ps@education.vic.gov.au to register your interest for adoption of the chicks.
WELLBEING:
Wellbeing Lessons in Weeks 1 and 2 will focus on reconnecting after the holiday break, creating a shooting star of something they are proud of at school for a whole school display in the office and discussing the fact that girls and boys can share the same interests.
HOMEWORK: Please read with your child each day. Continue practicing sounds and Heart Words each day. Continue to sound out and blend words. Reading Eggs can be completed as an extra activity if your child wishes. Their login code is already inside their Homework book.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN YEAR 2 Term 3 Weeks 1 & 2 |
LITERACY:
Reading - When reading, we are focusing on comparing and contrasting different types of texts. We will also be looking at making inferences about where a story takes place, using the authors language to help identify this.
Writing - We are introducing narratives this term. Weeks 1 and 2 will have us explore using a visual planner to plan a narrative. A big focus this term will be using correct punctuation and spelling accurately.
Spelling - To read, write and spell words with the ea and ear grapheme (sound) is our focus in weeks 1 & 2 as well as identifying synonyms (a word that has the same meaning as another word. Eg small, tiny, little, mini)
MATH: We are looking at subtraction and using the count back strategy to solve subtraction problems. We are also exploring chance and the language used around chance as well as identifying the probability of events.
INQUIRY: This term we are exploring the area of Science. We are looking at growing and cooking things. During weeks 1 and 2 we will be exploring growing things from a seed and identifying what living things need to grow.
WELLBEING: We are beginning our term with identifying what individual students are proud of about their learning and experience at school. We are asking students to identify what it means to be ‘proud to shine’.
HOMEWORK: Homework expectations are that students are completing home reading (at least every school night) and filling out their reading diary. Remember each student is aiming to get 200 nights of reading across the year to get a ticket to the Pizza Party! A reminder that your child also has a log in to mathseeds which they can access from home should they wish.
REMINDERS:
- Year 2 sport Tuesday afternoons.
- This term the students will have the amazing opportunity to attend our Grade 2 ‘day camp’. More details to follow.
- A gentle reminder that we discourage students bringing special toys, games, items etc to school due to the possibility of them getting lost or damaged. It is very upsetting to all when this happens. We like to remind students that if it is extra special, then it's best to leave it safely at home!
Our Mascots
Our Mascots are heading to your homes again during term 3. Bessy is going home with the children in 2MD and Bob is going home with the children in 2W. They will come home on a Wednesday and are expected to be returned on the following Monday. We have loved seeing what the mascots have been up to with the children so far and have seen some amazing handwriting from the children that they have then read and shared with their classes.
