Dear Somerville PS Families,

We have had an excellent start to Term 3; our students have come back full of energy and ready to learn! We have had a number of students reach 150 nights for Reading which is exceptional!

On Friday the 28th of July we have National Tree Planting Day; Chris our Science Teacher has organised a mass planting day for our students. Every child will plant a tree/shrub at Somerville Primary School.

Parent Teacher Interviews are live; please contact the office if you need assistance with booking the interviews.

NAPLAN Results come out next week; there are some changes to this year’s reporting. These are changes being introduced nationally by the Australian Curriculum Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA).

NAPLAN will continue to measure student achievement in numeracy, reading, writing, spelling, and grammar and punctuation but the results will now be presented in 4 proficiency levels:

These are:

  • exceeding
  • strong
  • developing
  • needs additional support.

This change will give schools, parents and carers clearer information that details student achievement against new proficiency levels.

Students’ NAPLAN reports will continue to show how they are tracking against their peers and provide an indication of their skill levels against national averages and where we would expect them to be in order to get the most out of schooling. This provides valuable information to teachers about how we can continue to support your child.

Each set of NAPLAN results is an important milestone but it’s also important that students know that one result does not define them – these results are about making sure every student gets the support they need so they can continue to get the best from their learning.

When we provide you with your results, you will also receive information about what the new proficiency levels mean.

Over the holidays the first stages of our school modernisation project were started. We have had the front paths asphalted, these will have some games and activities applied to the surface in coming weeks. Over the next 18 Months we have a number of projects to modernise our school, these include:

  • Shade sails over the main play-ground.
  • New shade sail and refurbishment of the structure for the Junior Playground.
  • Refurbishing the Library with a new entrance, new shelving, furniture, carpet, and wall coverings.
  • Refurbishing the Prep Classrooms with new carpet and wall coverings.
  • New carpet and painting inside the main building

We will continue to purchase new books throughout the next 2 years as well, this will support the new development of classroom libraries for students as well.

Meal Deal end of the month – we are all looking forward to Hamburgers!

Have a great weekend!

David and Shane
