Principal's News

Welcome back, the end of the first week of Term 3 and our first newsletter for the term. I trust that our families and school community enjoyed a break of some description. It is pleasing to see the manner in which our students have returned to routines and our classrooms, and we have enjoyed a great first week back together.

My holiday break included some time seeing Elemental, bowling and some swimming at GESAC. I also enjoyed seeing Carlton win a few games of footy and have had a few late nights watching the cricket. Speaking to many of our students, they are able to recount many fond highlights of their own holidays and time spent with family and friends.

We have an exciting term ahead and we look forward to sharing in this with you, we will continue to use our iNewsletter, school stream, seesaw and Instagram (@caulfieldps) to keep you informed and engaged in our school over the coming months.

NAPLAN Results

Ahead of NAPLAN results for students being released for our Year 3 and 5 students from Monday 17 July 2023, I’m writing to inform you of some changes to this year’s reporting. These are changes being introduced nationally by the Australian Curriculum Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA).

NAPLAN will continue to measure student achievement in numeracy, reading, writing, spelling, and grammar and punctuation but the results will now be presented in 4 proficiency levels:

  • exceeding
  • strong
  • developing
  • needs additional support.

This change will give schools, parents and carers clearer information that details student achievement against new proficiency levels. Students’ NAPLAN reports will continue to show how they are tracking against their peers and provide an indication of their skill levels against national averages and where we would expect them to be in order to get the most out of schooling. This provides valuable information to teachers about how we can continue to support your child.

Each set of NAPLAN results is an important milestone but it’s also important that students know that one result does not define them – these results are about making sure every student gets the support they need so they can continue to get the best from their learning. When we provide you with your results, you will also receive information about what the new proficiency levels mean.

Australian Catholic University’s Jessica Holloway, an expert in educational data and accountability recently noted, “conversations that parents have with their children about the results can really change the way that child thinks about themselves, not only in the immediate time but also for the future. Teachers are the ones who are on the ground. They’re the ones who know the students better than anybody. And they’re able to speak, really expertly, on the student’s progress and achievement level”.  With that in mind, as ever, you’re welcome to speak to myself, Morioka sensei or your child’s teacher with any questions about these changes or the results.

Fundraising & Support

With thanks to our Parents and Friends Club and our school community we were able to lay new carpet in our three prep classrooms over the school holiday break. This has provided new underlay and heavy-duty carpet and has given the classrooms a great facelift. My sincere thanks to families that helped out at our working bee in the final week of term and once again during the school holiday break to move furniture in and out of our classrooms ensuring that our excited prep students were able to start back on Monday without a moment of learning lost. All costs incurred for this work was directly supported by our Parents and Friends Club, a wonderful accomplishment. Thank you!

Assembly

Our first assembly of the term will be held on Monday morning and we look forward to beginning the week with our students and school community together. Weather dependent, these are always open to families and are run by our student leaders.

Welcome

I extend a warm welcome to Ms Tina Pyrcz, Ms. Pyrcz has joined our Year 5/6 team for Term 3 as a terrific replacement for Miss Ryan who has taken Long Service Leave for the Term. Our students have enjoyed getting to know Ms. Pyrcz throughout this week and she had made for a great addition to our school, I know you will join with myself and staff in making her feel welcome in our school community.

World Cup Fever

Australia is gearing up to host the upcoming Women’s World Cup from the 20th July – 20th August with 32 countries competing with games held in cities across Australia and New Zealand. To celebrate this special occasion, we have organised an exciting World Cup activity day for our students filled with friendly matches, skill-building activities, and fun competitions. Students will be encouraged to wear something to celebrate this event. We look forward to cheering on The Matilda’s and Nadeshiko Japan over the course of the tournament.

School Production

The biggest whole school event for Term 3 will undoubtedly be our school production of Peter Pan due to be held on the 6th September. This is a special celebration of our bilingual program and is many years in the making (given the disruptions caused by the pandemic). Tickets will go on sale over the weeks ahead, but if nothing else, please make sure you save the date to ensure you are available for the evening performance at the Kingston Town Hall.

School Fete

We will put a full stop on our production and immediately begin looking forward to our School Fete in Term 4 (Saturday, November 18th). Our Fete committee had an important onsite meeting yesterday evening (Thursday) with some delicious dinner served by Sam B (Father of Naoki and Mika). The committee are putting together a fantastic program full of events, cultural celebrations, food and entertainment. If we can ask for one piece of support right now as you are reading, click on the save the date image and share it with your family and friends.
