MANUFACTURING AND ENGINEERING

Year 11 Manufacturing students are storming through both the theory and practical components of the course. With most of the basic skills required in the production of their major toolbox task mastered, the boys are now working as an effective team to produce components accurately. Their cubic money boxes were impressive.

Year 12 Manufacturing students have been developing their skills in fabrication, spray painting and welding. We are about to start a vice project which allows students to use a variety of machining operations including lathe and milling operations.

BUSINESS SERVICES

Year 11 Business Servicesstudents have been working hard to complete their first Module, Working in the Industry. So far, they have proven their competency by completing the units Use business software applicationsSupport personal well-being in the workplace, and Assist with maintaining workplace safety

Students have created two office spaces in their classroom and have learned the value of safe ergonomic practices and their impact on wellbeing and safety. They have established a regular ergonomic break time during each lesson and have demonstrated the ability to perform WHS checks on rooms throughout the College. The next unit that students will complete is Deliver and monitor a service to customers.

CONSTRUCTION

The first carpentry projects for Year 11 students are nearly all completed. A timber concrete float to be used later this year, a timber mallet and saw stool were produced with a tool trunk being the current project. Students are being introduced to new tools, equipment and process with each project to develop their own skill sets.

Year 12 Construction students have recently completed a project for Mater Dei Primary School. Students have created four small slabs for the Cubby houses. This project allowed students to experience working with a client completing a JSA and plan the entire project. The slabs were completed to a high standard and the students should be pleased with the result. Brick and block laying is the focus for the next few weeks, students are enjoying the process of building a wall and pillar.

HOSPITALITY

Year 11 students have been busy this term working on Hygiene and Safety units within their online learning platform Axcelerate Turbo. Students have been engaging in the skills required to work effectively in the industry. Practical lessons have seen students turn their attention towards the Simple Dishes competency. They have recently cooked chicken parmigiana, wedges and salad, spaghetti bolognese, bread knots and pudding, leek and camembert quiche.

Year 12 are focusing on coffee in their practical unit this term. Students have three service periods to demonstrate how to create coffees at an industry standard. Students are practising hard and improving each practical lesson to try and meet this goal. In theory they are working through two of their last three units of work around the concepts of working effectively with others and sourcing and using information in the Hospitality industry. The delivery of their final unit and competency task is on the horizon for them.
