MENTAL COMPUTATION STRATEGIES

NEAR DOUBLES

We can use our automatic recall of doubles to help us answer questions that are close to our doubles, like 8 + 7,  4 + 5, or  80 + 70. 

We work with the children to be able to identify questions where this could be a good strategy to use and to solve questions by using their doubles, for example: 

8 + 7, is double 7 plus one more. So 14 + 1 = 15

A game the children can use to help them with this strategy is attached below. There is also a video that was created during remote learning that explains the game.  You can use an online dice roller and anything from almonds to lego as counters to play this game at home! 

MATIFIC

All students have an account on the Matific platform. Over the holidays you may like to get your children to log in to Matific and have a play to keep their maths skills refreshed! 

We will also be participating in the Matific Olympiad next term, where students will be competing against other schools to collect as many stars as they can. Last year we finished in the top 20 of schools in Australia and New Zealand. This year our goal is to reach the Top 10!! 

There will be certificates awarded to those who have completed the Olympiad challenge and a chance for students to win a $500 Apple Voucher.
