What we are learning:

Writing

Students will be writing a personal recount and beginning to edit their sentences. Students will be reminded to begin their sentence with a capital and end with a full stop. Students will be exposed to the 4 Ws (when, where, who, what) and they will draw and write about each of the special 'w' words.

Reading

We will be learning the floss rule. Focusing on digraphs ll, ff, ss, zz. When a one-syllable word ends in f, l, z or s, double the final f, l, z or s (for example, sniff, fall, mess, buzz).

We will be learning about open and closed syllables. When an open syllable ends with a vowel it says its letter name (a, e, i, o, or u). For example when we can read the word ‘me’ the letter 'e' says its name. However, if we close the syllable, we can read the word ‘met’ and use the short vowel sound /e/.

Maths

We will be focusing on Place Value and exploring the teen numbers. We have reinforced that, “ten ones makes a ten.” Also, that a teen number is a ten and some ones. The number 14 is one ten and four ones. We will also revise addition stories and use picture story books to inspire some addition problems.

Wellbeing

We will be discussing what emotions look like and play a game that involves emotion recognition. We will be discussing how our positive thoughts assist us to be successful. Students will learn to chant a positive message.

Reminders

Students can log into Reading Eggs and Mathletics which is a great resource to consolidate learning. Log-ins are pasted into the Boomerang book. Please see your classroom teacher if you have any questions.

We have noticed there are many children who come to school with laces. If they can't tie their laces, it is recommended they have velcro shoes. Here is a video to assist with learning to tie laces.

Inquiry

Our new topic is ‘Weather and Seasons.’ This topic will have a science focus and to begin the unit, children will participate in a pre-test and share what they already know about weather and seasonal changes. Students will create a Glossary of weather words and share what is their favourite type of weather and why.

Professor Bunsen Incursion

We were lucky enough to watch an exciting science show with Professor Bunsen. We learnt about chemical changes and we learnt about the forces of push and pull. We watched Eira step through a small piece of paper. Zayd showed us how a balloon can push through the air and Mia pushed some streamers out of a party popper. Rossy and Kasen had electrons firing from their hair and Luna drifted across the floor. Our favourite highlight when Mrs Hermann’s white T-shirt was covered in blue ink. Don’t worry it was disappearing ink!
