From the Acting Principal

Week 1

Welcome to Term 3 2023

Dear Parents and Carers

We wish to welcome you all back to Term 3. We trust that you have found some opportunities to recharge the students' batteries ready for the upcoming term. Hopefully you found some time for family outings or events as well. The yard and classrooms have been abuzz with conversations about interesting things the children got up to, which should lead to some great pieces of creative writing in the near future.

The classroom teachers were in school over the holidays getting ready to kick off Term 3 units of work with the common theme of Science and Design and Technology. The Prep unit ‘It’s a Material World’ will focus on the properties of matter, while the Year 1/2 students’ unit, ‘Look Listen and Shine,’ will be about sources of light and sound. The 3/4 students will explore the unit,  ‘Move It’ which focuses on how forces make things move and the 5/6 students will explore 'Why Is It So?’, looking at Biological, Chemical, Physical and Earth/Space Sciences.

Term overviews have been sent home with the students today. These give you a brief outline of the various concepts the children will be looking at across the key learning areas as well as some important dates for the term. Please take some time to have a look at them and possibly keep them on the fridge door or somewhere visible. This way when you are asking your children about what they have been learning at school they can act as a prompt to dig for more information if you get the response ‘nothing’ or ‘I can’t remember!’ It is well known in education, having parental engagement and home connection to school learning is a powerful aspect of the parent school partnership.

OLHC staff participated in an RE professional development day on Monday the 10th of July in conjunction with the staff from Holy Trinity, with a focus on developing prayer with children. We worked with Melbourne Christian singer songwriter Gen Bryant and members of her energetic, and inspirational young ministry team, “The GB Team”.  A main focus of the day was around incorporating music, meditation and self reflection in classroom prayer, with the aim of building relationships through faith, kindness and grace. We thank Gen and her team and wish them well as they head off to perform at World Youth Day in Portugal in front of an estimated 1.5 million people.

All our classes have been celebrating NAIDOC Week this week with a variety of activities exploring this year's theme of ‘For Our Elders.’ Mrs Cumming and the FIRE carrier team have not only been promoting the activities for this week but have been looking at ways that links can be made to our whole term's learning. It will be great to see how our students can make links to Science and Design Technology with the ancient learning of our first nations people.

We welcome Audrey into 3/4C. It is always wonderful to see how our students welcome people and make them feel part of the community.

In sporting news we continue our preparations for the weekly Inter School Sports of basketball, volleyball, rounders and finska that will commence next week. We are also preparing for the District Athletics Carnival on Friday 28th July. Many of our Year 5 and 6 students will be in the team and I’m hoping that we will have plenty of parent helpers at the event to cheer us on.

Regards
