UNITE: National Reconciliation Week took place from the 27th May to the 3rd June 2023.
National Reconciliation Week (NRW) is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.
This year's year's theme "Be a Voice for Generations", urges all Australians to use their power, their words and their actions to create a better Australia for all of us.
Our students participated in activities during National Reconciliation Week including a session with a Yorta Yorta Tidda artist, and an excursion to the Koorie Student Aspirations Day at the Geelong Tech School.
Georgia from Banyuip Creates is a Yorta Yorta Tidda artist working with Surf Coast Secondary College First Nations students to create a logo that represents their group Koling Wadangal – lets us walk together. We look forward to sharing the finished product.
First Nations students went along to the Koorie Student Aspirations Day at the Geelong Tech School on 25th of May.
Over the day we heard from guest speakers Chris Warrior - Drone Pilot, Brett Leavy - Virtual Songlines, Simon Pampena - Mathematician, participated in STEM Workshops and got to watch a great performance from Bricky B.
FLOURISH: For the last few weeks of term, the Year 8 students and teachers are forming Viking Clans for a Deep Learning Task. Each lesson, clans plan which activities they would like to complete, incorporating the skills and knowledge from each FUSE area that we have covered so far this year and creating a presentation. They are using their geometry skills to design and build longships and Viking forts, capitalising on their understanding of using language to persuade to form alliances with other clans and build their empires, and showcasing their knowledge of the Viking Age, staking claims of areas on the map and justifying the countries that they will conquer.
Stay tuned for more updates as we get artsy and crafty this week, making models, dioramas and costumes to present in the Viking Voyagers Expo on the last day of term!
RESPECT: As part of the Coastal Guardians program, our Year 9 students went to Point Impossible to learn about conserving cultural heritage and environment, the history of rehabilitation works in the area and the impact of change in land-use in the area of our local environment. Our students also helped clear the area of litter.
UNITE: Year 9 Outdoor Education students spent a day rock climbing and abseiling at the You Yangs. Students worked together, overcame fears and encouraged each other to succeed.
STRIVE: Students have been working through the design process to complete their own stool design. Check out their fabulous creations!
FLOURISH: Year 10 Visual Communication and design students learning about graphic design and screen printing processes on clothing.
STRIVE: We are thrilled to announce this year's winners of the ANZ Math Championship! These students worked hard to answer up to 2,164 questions during the competition, and we are so proud of their achievements. Please join us in congratulating our Gold Award winner, Caiden Stahel, and our Silver Award winners, Paige Evans and Taylor Woods.
We came 6th in Victoria out of 288 competing schools and are in the top 3% globally out of of 1,563 schools. We are also in the top 3% of high achievers in Australia.
Well done to all of our participants for their hard work and dedication in the ANZ Math Championship!
UNITE: Last week, our whole school Student Representative Council met to work on developing our School Wide Positive Behaviour Matrix. Students used our school values of Strive, Unite, Respect and Flourish to develop positive behavioural expectations for our College. This work will be shared at our whole school staff meeting to develop further. The group worked in smaller groups to focus on different settings around the school and they also enjoyed a nice lunch of hot chips (with chicken salt from the local fish and chip shop!)
FLOURISH: Hands on Learning and the Torquay Community House had another wonderful lunch this week. Students created and served a beautiful Mediterranean soup and apple crumble to 50 people for lunch. It is so great to get out and help our community. We look forward to the next one on the 1st of August.
STRIVE: We had a wonderful day here at Surf Coast Secondary College! We were lucky enough to have Grade 4 Torquay College students visit us last week to take part in some science practicals and theories.
Discussing all things solid, liquid and gas, these students were engaged and enthusiastic. An absolute delight, we hope you enjoyed your time here!
RESPECT: Every Monday at lunchtime, there is an environment club (Surf N Earth) that meets in Pod A’s Fuse area (LCW). At the moment the club is a group of Year 7s but everyone is welcome.
In Term 1, our goal was to encourage students to discard their food scraps into the compost bins around our school. This term, we are currently working on nude food and how to reduce littering and rubbish going into landfill.
Ways that we showed awareness of nude food was putting up posters on a pin board in the year 7 locker room. Come join Miss Damen and the Surf N Earth team at Monday lunchtimes!
