MUSICIAN DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM (MDP)
CONCERT SEASON
We truly have some wonderful musicians at this college and semester 1 has been a truly great start to 2023 for MDP. Students have performed both in solo and group contexts through studio concerts/soirees, an epic ensemble concert, transition evenings, school assemblies and lunch time courtyard performances. The students have also experienced their first MDP masterclass of 2023.
The recent masterclass featured some truly outstanding jazz musicians who visited the college to present to the students. Tim Wilson (sax), Mat Jodrell (trumpet), Sam Bates (drums), Darrin Archer (piano) and Tom Lee (bass) showed the students how to interact in a band setting, how to improvise and what to think about when playing Jazz or any style of music. It was eye opening and amazing to witness. Student feedback was very positive, and the visiting artists loved that Kambrya put on events like this for our MDP cohort.
The ensemble concert was a truly massive night and albeit, a sold-out show with some unexpected seating/capacity issues, a very successful event overall. Thanks to all the parents for their patience! It was so great to see so many people coming to support the music students. The students showcased their ensembles brilliantly to a packed theatre and proved that hard work really does pay off. It was truly inspiring to see the students – many of which, were performing live for the first time – get up on stage and give it a go. The studio concert series was as popular as ever with students opting in to have a chance to perform solo or in small groups. These concerts are an amazing way to experience live performance and practice these skills in a low-pressure environment. It’s great to see students embracing studio concerts and I look forward to many more. Congratulations to everyone who performed. You’re all rockstars in my book!
TRUMPET / TROMBONE – SPECIAL OFFER – Spots now filled!
Thanks to everyone who applied to be part of the recently advertised Brass Trial starting in Term 3. We have now filled all available positions for this trial. Sorry if you were not able to get a spot! Remember, if you're interested in learning an instrument in MDP at the college, speak to Adrian Violi or Tahlia Leedekerken about registering your interest.
MDP in 2024!
I know it’s crazy to already be thinking about 2024 but this is often the way with such a busy school such as Kambrya. In term 3 we’ll be asking students who are already in MDP whether they are intending on continuing in 2024. This will allow us to generate new contracts and plan around many places we will have available for the next generation of MDP students in year 7! There was a heap of interest for MDP this year so it will be imperative to finalise continuing students early. Thanks in advance for your cooperation.
Looking forward to a very awesome semester 2 of music. Stay warm everyone!

PRODUCTION
Production is coming up quickly this year and we cannot wait. This year the college is doing Matilda the Musical Jr. For anyone who isn’t familiar with ‘Matilda’ it follows the story of a young girl who has astonishing wit,, intelligence… and special powers! She’s unloved by her cruel parents but impresses her schoolteacher, the highly loveable Miss Honey. Matilda’s school life isn’t completely smooth sailing, however – the school’s mean headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, hates children and just loves thinking up new punishments for those who don’t abide by her rules. But Matilda has courage and cleverness in equal amounts, and could be the school pupil’s saving grace! Full of mishaps, imagination and some seriously great opportunities for our cast and crew to shine, we are sure that our Kambrya College version is going to be nothing short of wonderful.
Tickets will be going on sale soon, please keep an eye on Compass and the newsletter for updates!
