Preschool Counts … 1, 2, 3, …
Learning about mathematics starts in the home and is built upon in preschool. Over Semester 1 we have observed the children adding to their mathematical thinking when playing at Oak Flats Public School Preschool. In so many ways the children are exploring mathematics through their games, conversations and play. The children have learned about counting by lining up and counting rocks, small animals and beads. We also use songs and music to count. Recently, we have asked the children to take turns to count all of the children before we go outside or inside. This helps the children understand that number relates to an amount.
Using the variety of blocks and construction pieces the children can build to tall heights. They also know that at preschool the limit to a building is their own height for safety reasons. This has prompted discussions on measurement and the introduction of using a one metre ruler. Making patterns, finding shapes, considering size, volume and time all are present in our day. The children are becoming aware of how long 3 minutes takes when they use a timer to wait for a fair turn of a toy. When the children dig in the dirt, sand and mix mud they can be heard asking for more water or saying that they have too much sand. This often occurs in the mud kitchen where the children create wonderful recipes. Volume and measurement are also explored through cooking experiences too. It is through this social setting where many conversations and questions prompt and extend the children’s mathematical thinking.
For further consideration on how you can extend your child’s mathematical thinking at home consider reading the NSW Department of Education’s “Everyday learner cards” on the Resources for families webpage:
