EXCEL Sports Program
Exercise Physiology
On Wednesday November 6, the Year 9 EXCEL Sport class went to the Sports Injury Clinic in Frankston to participate in a running assessment and plyometric/strength training. This session was conducted by four trained exercise physiologists that ran the students through a series of core and functional strength/power exercises to assist in efficient movement. The students were also observed running on a treadmill to help identify any technique deficiencies. It was a worthwhile experience for the students to understand the training and preparation that elite athletes undergo to perform at the highest level, as well as injury rehabilitation.
AIS EXCEL Sport Canberra
On Monday October 14, the Year 9 EXCEL Sport class embarked on an exciting five-day journey to Canberra. The students experienced life as an elite athlete at Australia’s premier sporting facility, the Australian Institute of Sport. Throughout our stay, the students trained and dined alongside Olympic and National athletes. Many facets of ‘being the best’ were covered, including strength and conditioning, recovery and nutrition. The students were given an opportunity to use many of the facilities and appreciate what life as an elite athlete looks like. A fantastic experience for both staff and students, which consolidated much of the learning of the past three years of the EXCEL Sport Program. A special thank you to Mr. Andriessen and Ms. Daly for giving their time for the week.
NPD Lawn Bowls Championships
A selection of 13 students from the Year 8 EXCEL Sport and Sport and Recreation class competed in the Northern Peninsula District Lawn Bowls Championships at Carrum Bowling Club on Friday November 1. The class had been guided through a couple of clinics by volunteers at the Bowling Club on two previous occasions and were ready to compete against other schools. All of our teams competed extremely well against students of all ages. The Patterson River Secondary College team finished second and received a runners-up trophy. A fantastic event where boys and girls can compete on a level playing field against students of all ages. Well done.
Ultimate Frisbee Gala Day 2019
On Wednesday 20 November, the Year 8 EXCEL Sport class entered the Mullum Mullum District Gala Day against schools in this area to compete in Ultimate Frisbee. The class has been training for three weeks under Mr. Andriessen’s expert guidance. Both the boys’ and girls’ team completed the round robin section of the tournament undefeated on a beautiful day at Mahoney’s Reserve, Forest Hill. We entered the finals as clear favorites, and the pressure of coming home with two wins which this class has never achieved thus far. After two nervous starts, both the boys’ and girls’ team won their respective grand finals against formidable opposition, Ashwood Secondary College. A fantastic way to end the Year 8 EXCEL sport year. Thank you to Mrs. Brand for coaching the victorious girls team on the day.
Cable Park - Year 10
On Thursday 31st October the Year 10 EXCEL Sport class attended their final excursion after four years in the program. A fantastic way to end our time together. The students experienced a challenging high ropes course with beautiful 360 degree views to begin the day. This was followed by knee and wake boarding adventures at the Cable lake which saw spills, success and lots of smiles by all. After lunch the students exerted any last energy they had on the Aqua Park. Thank you to these amazing students for embracing all of the sporting opportunities presented and assisting to grow and promote a successful EXCEL Sport Program. I will miss you.
