Sports Report

Year 7 Hockey

The Year 7 Hockey Team have been training together with Mr Cook since the start of Term 3. During Term 3 the team won the South Eastern Division and proceeded through to the Southern Metropolitan Regional Finals. On the 28th October we drove to the Hawthorn Hockey Centre to compete in 3 games and a possible final. The boys played extremely well and won all 3 games placing them in the final against Mornington. At the final siren the game was drawn leaving us to a penalty shootout to decide who was the winner. After both teams missed the first two penalties, our third and fourth penalty taker scored. Our keeper – Zac Pendrey, was able to defend the goals to win the game.

Year 7 2019 State Hockey Champions

On Tuesday the 19th of November the Year 7 Hockey Team travelled to the Footscray Hockey Centre to compete in the State Finals. The boys played extremely well, winning 3 pool games to finish on top of the pool. We played against Blackburn Secondary College in the State Final who were a very strong unit. The boys scored a goal in the first few minutes of the game and were able to defend their goals for the last 35 minutes. This included 6 short corners in the last half. The boys won 1-0 and were presented their medals and flag at the end of the game in a presentation. The boys should be commended on their efforts and will look to defend their state title next year.

Southern Metropolitan Regional Finals – Intermediate Girls Cricket Quarter Finals

Patterson River Secondary College played Alkira Secondary College in the quarter finals of the Intermediate Girls Cricket Competition. Our team consisted of Maddison Evans, Sage Kirby, Alex Mason, Eve Mooney, Cassie Ridout, Talzyn Roberts (captain), Emily Terlicher and Madeleine Terlicher. Weather conditions reduced the T20 game to a cut throat five over game. We won the toss and chose to bat, sending out Cassie and Alex to open the batting. Alex was run out early attempting to bolster the scoreboard. This brought in Talzyn who began a solid partnership with Cassie. At the end of our five overs we had scored 1/14 which we knew was defendable in the tough, wet, windy conditions.

Madeleine opened the bowling for us, taking 2 crucial wickets and having only one run scored off the bat. Talzyn created pressure with her bowling and also got a run out at the bowler’s end. Maddison was extremely economical with her bowling, conceding only 1 run off her over. To round out the wickets, Cassie fielded and threw to wicketkeeper Emily who took the bails off, running out the 3rd batter for Alkira. Alkira ended up on 4/14 after their 5 overs. This meant it was a tie, with us being awarded the win because we took more wickets.

The team showed a high level perseverance and resilience on a day which presented us with less than ideal conditions for cricket. The girls just got out there and gave their best, with each person doing what was required for the team.  Next stop – semi-finals!

Track and Field Championships

Southern Metropolitan Secondary Track & Field Championships

On Thursday, 10th of October ten students competed at the Southern Metropolitan Secondary Track & Field Championships at Casey Fields Athletics Stadium. Unfortunately, the weather certainly threw up a few issues, however, no events were cancelled and all students were provided with their chance to shine.

It was pleasing to see our students committing themselves fully on the day. They offered each other some wonderful support and encouragement and the school community should be very proud of their achievements. Some outstanding results were achieved and 3 talented students; Rhys McKenna, Shannon Delaney and Shkyiah Upson progressed through to the Victorian Secondary School Athletics Carnival.

Rhys McKenna’s performance in the girls 15 Year Olds Javelin Throw was outstanding. Rhys amazed spectators with a 33.57m throw which achieved her another 1st place result. Well done and congratulations Rhys!
