Pantry 5000

To finish off the year, 11 and 12 VCAL students worked together to assist a non-profit organisation called Pantry 5000.  Students spent time helping organise  food for those who are less fortunate and don't have the same easy access to food.

After visiting and helping, the VCAL students ran a food drive collecting non-perishable food for the Pantry 5000.

A very rewarding end to the year.

Intermediate VCAL

Year 11 students were welcomed into the Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) Program at the start of step-up to pursue their selected pathway. The VCAL Program has students attending school three days per week along with a day studying a VET course and a day undertaking a Structured Workplace Learning opportunity relevant to their pathway.

During Step-up students constructed ‘wicking garden beds’ for the Year 9 Garden. These garden beds act like a reservoir and keep th soil wet from below. In order for the Intermediate VCAL students to successfully complete the project they needed to:

  • Plan what materials to use
  • Determine the price
  • Survey the Year 9 Students to find out what plants they would like to plant in the gardens
  • Visit Mitre 10 to purchase the materials
  • Construct the wicking beds
  • Hand over to the Year 9 Students.

Senior VCAL

The year 12 students explored the idea of what VCAL means to them and how the value the program through symbols and art. The end goal was to have designed a piece of art that represents VCAL that could be hung in the VCAL classrooms.

The project involved students exploring what words they associate with VCAL and symbols that they could use to best represent the program. Students then combined their ideas with their classmates to come up with a set of symbols. Students then drew their final design.

The students then used gridding to enlarge practice cartoon pictures to at least double their original size. Once confident, students then enlarged their final VCAL designs onto their plywood boards, painted them up ready to hang in their classrooms.
