LEARNING MATTERS

YEAR 9 DIGITAL PORTFOLIOS

The Year 9 BYTES program is all about getting students to develop essential skills, particularly in the areas of effective use of ICT and self reflection.  One task which embraces both these attributes is the Digital Portfolio.  In the first weeks of Term 1 students create a personal Google site which documents their experiences in the subject over the course of the entire year.  It will eventually comprise a separate page for each of the five BYTES modules undertaken, with each containing written reflections and work samples demonstrating the skills and knowledge they have acquired.  The Digital Portfolio therefore becomes a personal exploration of each students’ learning journey in BYTES, and as such, is unique to each individual.

The written reflections for each module focus on specific learning attributes, including leadership, teamwork, community, communication, effective research and creativity/design.  Students need to think about how they have performed in these areas by discussing their achievements and highlights within the module, but also areas where they can improve.

These ideas are then complemented by work samples, such as short videos, Google docs, photos, Google presentations, animations and blogs.  With McKinnon embracing Chromebooks and their associated Google apps, this task provides an excellent opportunity for students to develop their skills in using Google Drive, including the process of sharing, editing, and collaborating within online documents.  Moreover, by embedding these work samples into each of their pages, the Digital Portfolios become more engaging, interactive and unique.

By working on this task over the course of a whole year, students have the opportunity to think more deeply about their learning.  This vital, yet difficult skill, greatly helps students evaluate their progress, a necessary skill to ensure success both during school and beyond.
