Year Levels & Specialist News

Foundation News

Firstly, we’d like to thank the parents who have volunteered to listen to students read. Most slots are now full but there will be further opportunities in Term Three to pop in.

In Maths, we are learning about addition and using lots of resources such as counters for support. We are also practising writing numbers correctly and not reversing them.

It’s been fantastic to see how enthusiastically the Foundation students are learning the Magic Words! The Magic Words are high-frequency words, and practising them helps the children to develop their reading skills. However, if they can read the words, they can identify and copy them when writing. Some words are decodable (we can use common letter sounds to read), such as ‘it’, and others are more challenging such as ‘was’ and ‘said’. Practising for short periods of time regularly works well.

Our library sessions are every Wednesday afternoon. Students must return books in order to borrow more and should bring the books in the red bags. Thank you for supporting the children to remember their books.

Year 1 News

Como House

On Friday 28th April, Year 1 had an excursion to Como House to learn more about the past and the present. The students had the opportunity to learn about the life of servants, play old fashioned games, explore the beautiful gardens and learn about the life of the privileged Armytage family who were the former owners. Thank you to our parent helpers. Everyone had a wonderful day!

Year 2 News

Shrine of Remembrance

This week the Year 2 students went to the Shrine of Remembrance to learn about the building and its artifacts.

"We saw the statue of Simpson and his Donkey. They helped to carry the injured soldiers to safety."  Ivana

"The Eternal flame has only been extinguished twice. Once when it hailed a lot, and the other time was when the gas pipe was cut." Frankie

"We saw a very special medal called the Victoria Cross. This was given to soldiers for being very brave." Bonnie

Year 5 News

The past couple of weeks Year Five students have been working on units of measurement including volume, length, area and perimeter. Some students were investigating the nets of 3-D shapes and built amazing castles, which worked in well with our fantasy narratives.

Students also had a fun Virtual Reality experience on Star Wars Day (May 4th) using headsets to play Beat Saber. All students enjoyed using the force to conquer the cubes that were flying toward them!

A reminder that we will be attending Sovereign Hill on Friday 2 June. It is now on COMPASS and consent is required by Wednesday 31 May. The busses will be departing the school at 7:45am, so students will need to be at school no later than 7:30am!

The ES staff have been so busy the last month, with excursions, classes, weekly sport and library. Their work ethic has been amazing. A big thank you to all for going above and beyond. I know it’s not always easy, but it is worth it. Next term we look forward to Michelle back in the fold , as she has been on Long service leave enjoying the quality time with her family.

Tuesday 16th May is Education Support Day

On behalf of the leadership and staff we would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for all you do, the care and compassion you show our students, both emotionally and educationally, helps boost their confidence and equips our students with the tools needed to move forward. The definition of Inclusion is: The practice of providing equal access to opportunities and resources for people who might otherwise be excluded or marginalized such as those who have a physical or intellectual disabilities and members of other minority groups. We value and promote diversity and inclusion in every aspect of a child’s education.

Welcome Simone

We would also like to say a big hearty welcome to Simone Andrews who has joined the OPS team. Simone has experience in education administration and has been a great addition to the team. Simone lives in the local area and is aware of the community and its concerns and strengths.

Farewell Brodie

Our final bit of news is that late last term we had to say goodbye to Brodie. We would all like to thank her for her experience, knowledge, and friendship throughout her time at OPS. Brodie has gone onto bigger and better challenges in her career, we wish her well and know she will be sadly missed in the front office by both staff and the OPS community.

Education Sub-Committee

Dear OPS Community,

What was that I heard you ask? "How can I get involved in making Ormond Primary School an even more engaging and stimulating place to learn and thrive?" So glad you asked! The Education Sub-Committee is where you can bring your passion for our school community, your skills in collaboration and your drive to make things happen instead of just talking about it.  In 2023 our major focus will be:

  1. Developing an OPS Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP).
  2. Exploring how we can empower all members of the OPS community to be welcoming, inclusive and supportive of the Neurodivergent students who bring so much to our school.
  3. Developing learning opportunities for the wider community to engage with what happens in the classroom, such as showcasing the AMAZING work our students and teachers do. Our results are great, we need to celebrate this!!

We will be meeting on the Tuesday in the week before School Council at 6pm – 7pm in the conference room at OPS. The meeting dates are as follows:

  • 13th June
  • 11th July
  • 8th August
  • 5th September
  • 10th October
  • 7th November
  • 5th December

If you are keen to be a part of this productive and vibrant committee, please respond to this email. I look forward to working with you this year.

Regards,

Delia Robey
