Principal Report & School Information
From the Principal...
Recent Highlights
Our Year 2 classes expreienced an enjoyable and informative excursion to the Shrine of Remembrance, also managing to avoid the inclement weather. Thankyou to the parents who attended and staff. The students were able to share their experiences and highlights with me on their return.
This Friday, we welcome mothers, carers and special friends to the coffee van morning. All visitors are welcome to enter classrooms and see what students have been doing in their rooms. Happy Mother’s Day to you all for Sunday!
Next Monday, the SRC students will finally receive their official badges at assembly. I do know they have been meeting regularly and planning under the supportive guidance of Miss.L from Year 6.
Attitudes to School Survey (AToSS)
For 2023, the Attitudes to School Survey will be offered to students to complete online from 4 May to 9 June 2023. ORIMA Research Pty Ltd has been contracted by the department to administer the online collection of the Attitudes to School Survey. All schools are expected to participate in the 2023 Attitudes to School Survey, providing the opportunity for students from Year 4 to Year 12 to complete the survey.
Leadership must ensure that the school community are notified about the survey prior to commencement and that participation is voluntary. A letter to opt out will be provided to families and should be returned prior to the survey being administered. The school will provide details of dates and a link to the survey questions, with the letter to opt out.
School Tours
I was delighted to show around a number of potential Foundation families for 2024 and some families moving from overseas. All families with children who will be attending school in 2024 are invited to enrol for Prep. Children need to turn 5 years of age before 30 April 2024. We look forward to meeting more potential OPS families and children on the many tours to follow. From all accounts the kinder and early learning children I met were enthusiastic, engaged and most definitely ready to start school next year.
Please reach out if you require any further information.
Parents of students in year 6 have received the Year 6 to Year 7 Placement Information pack 2023-2024. As their child is now in their final year of primary school, it is time to decide where they will begin secondary school. The Department’s ‘Find My School’ website allows parents to find their designated neighbourhood school. The form which was included in the pack needs to be returned to the Year 6 transition co-ordinator (Amy Jones).
NAPLAN Reforms & Information
An important update re the way NAPLAN results will be reported this year. On Friday 10 February, Education Ministers agreed to proceed with a set of reforms for NAPLAN 2023. These included resetting the NAPLAN scale and time series to align with the completion of the online transition in 2022, and to improve the accuracy of results.
In addition, a set of four achievement levels (proficiency standards) will be introduced to replace the existing 10 bands and the National Minimum Standard used for NAPLAN reporting between 2008 and 2022.
It is hoped that this change will provide schools, parents, and carers with clearer information that details student achievement against new proficiency standards. The standards for NAPLAN 2023 and for all testing moving forward are as follows:
- Exceeding
- Strong
- Developing
- Needs additional support.
These standards will represent a challenging but reasonable expectation of what students at each year level know and can do at the time of NAPLAN testing.
How will NAPLAN results be provided to students, parents, and carers?
Hard copies of student reports will continue to be distributed to all students who completed the NAPLAN 2023 tests. The individual reports will incorporate the four new proficiency standards, along with instructions for how to interpret the new achievement scale and student performance. The report will continue to show the national average and the range of achievement for the middle 60 per cent of students in their year level, allowing comparison of a child’s achievement against these measures.
When are NAPLAN results expected to be released?
In Victoria, NAPLAN 2023 school and individual student results are expected to be released by mid-late July 2023 and hard copy student reports will then be distributed to families.
