Year 6 Market Day

It is almost here! This Friday our Year 6 students will be holding their annual Market Day at the school.

Market Day is a project that our Year Six students take huge pride in running each year. Groups of students operate a stall or activity for the enjoyment of the whole school.

The students have been studying financial literacy and learning about concepts including supply and demand, overheads, and profits. The Market Day also develops their leadership skills of planning, decision making and reflection. The stalls this year are;

Chocolate Toss
Sponge the Teacher
Danny’s Dazzling Disco
Hilarious Hairstyles
Elsa’s Magical Ice-cream
Disney’s Drinks
Hubie’s House of Horrors
Carnival Games of the Caribbean

All other year levels are invited to attend Market Day and spend small amounts of money at the various market stalls, and will attend with their class at an assigned time with their teachers. The profits from the stalls are then used by the Year 6 students on their yearbook and graduation celebrations at the end of the year.

Each market stall will cost between $1 - $3.

We are asking for your support by providing your child with a small amount of money to spend. Please do this by sending in money in a labelled envelope or zip lock bag.

Your child’s Class Teacher will keep the money in a safe place and return it to them on Market Day. As each stall costs $1 - $3, please include gold coins instead of notes. The maximum amount for children to spend is $15 per child.

Mother's and Special Persons Day morning event

With Mother's Day taking place this Sunday, once again our Parents' Association will be helping our students and families to celebrate the special women in their lives.

Following last year's successful event, this will take place at school from 8am this Friday 12th May.

The fathers in the Parents' Association will be offering a delicious croissant and drink (coffee or juice) for sale at $5 cash, accompanied by some soothing piano music. Please bring correct change.

Get to school early on the day and allow your child to treat you and say thanks for being such wonderful mothers and special persons.

Mothers and Special Persons Day Lunch

A big thank you to all of those parents who are attending the Mother's Day lunch event this Friday at The Deck at the Prince Hotel on the corner of Fitzroy and Acland Streets.

A reminder to all attendees to this wonderful event to bring cash for the raffle and fundraising on the day. Tickets will be $10 each or 3 for $20.

All funds raised on the day are going to be donated to the SKIPPS camp fund to financially assist families in the school community to send their children on school camp.

A massive thank you to Terri-Ann Stynes and her team for organising this great event again this year and I hope that all in attendance have a great time.

Celebrating Victorian Education Week

Next week is the statewide Education Week.

Education Week is an annual celebration of public education in Victoria. This year’s theme is ‘Active Learners: Move, Make, Motivate’, which celebrates physical activity, hands-on learning and student voice in education.

During the week our classes will engage in a range of classroom activities linked to this theme and we are looking forward to sharing some of these with you in our next couple of newsletters.

The high point of the week will be a whole-school active event straight after our Friday morning assembly on the 19th May where we will try to move, make and motivate with the whole community (parents and carers included).

This event will take the form of a whole-school dance on the basketball court at 9:15am. Classes across the school are currently getting active and learning the Australian tradition of the 'Nutbush'. We aim to get the music going, get up and celebrate together and we invite all of our community to join in. We know from Jazz in the Park this year that many of our parents are familiar with the moves and should have no problems getting involved.

Run Club - every Friday morning

We are thrilled that Run Club is now up and running for 2023. We held our first session last Friday morning and had a wonderful turn-out of 20 students in beautiful weather.

For those who have not been before, Run Club is open to everyone (students, parents and friends) with the aim being to complete as many laps of the oval as possible. We keep records of the number of laps completed over a year and students are challenged to build their fitness and get active before school.

We will recognise and celebrate milestones reached during the year at assembly.

A huge thank you to Fraser Marsden and Ashley Gudgeon for co-ordinating the club this year.

If you are keen to join in, just come along to the school oval at 8am each Friday morning. Laps start from the side entrance to the school.

Police Visit to the 3/4 classrooms

Last week our Year 3/4 classes had some new visitors to their classrooms - officers from the St Kilda Police station.

The officers worked with the students to share the many important jobs that they do and what to do should they ever need help. They were really keen to challenge any stereotypes that police officers are to be feared and did this so well by being really approachable, friendly and warm towards the students.

Whilst our students loved the presentation and discussions, the lasting memory of the day was the chance to see inside the police cars, sound the sirens and check out the awesome kit that the officers had.

We look forward to continuing to work with the local police in future.

Rapid Antigen Tests

With winter in the air this week and COVID-19 cases still very common across Victoria, this week we will be distributing a pack of five rapid antigen tests to each child to bring home.

The latest health guidance from the government is that;

We appreciate your support in helping us to manage this situation throughout the winter and trying to minimise and stay on top of any cases amongst the school community.

Please use the tests sent home to help quickly pick up any covid cases where they occur and we ask you to keep your child at home for five days if they test positive.

Enrolling for 2024?

Whilst 2023 feels like it has only just begun, we are already starting the process of planning ahead and enrolling students for next year.

To support us, if you have a child starting at school next year, we would appreciate you completing and returning an enrolment form to the school office as soon as possible. These are available to collect from the school office.

Education Department policy states that the deadline for families to submit their Foundation 2024 enrolment forms to schools is Friday 28th July.

Sub-Committee Meetings

Our school has a number of permanent working groups called sub-committees. These groups are made up of staff members and dedicated parents who meet ten times a year with a focus to make our school a better place.

Sub-committees are open for anyone to join and rely on the energy, ideas and hard work of parents to improve the school experience for all of our students.
