ANZAC biscuits with Year 2

During the first few weeks of term, the Year 2s have been busily building on their understanding of instructional texts. As a part of our Writing unit, we looked at the use of bossy (imperative) verbs to create instructions and how we can use time connectives to create a sense of flow.

For our Writing, the children worked on writing their own recipes for ANZAC biscuits. We were lucky enough to have parent helpers come in and make ANZAC biscuits with us. The Year 2s had a ball and the delectable aroma of oats and golden syrup filled the staff room! Thank you so much again to the wonderful parents who helped us out with the baking!

We have a lovely display with all of our ANZAC biscuit recipes in the Year 2 corridor - please come and read our incredible work! Here is an example of one of our ANZAC biscuit recipes, written by Tom in 2B:

ANZAC Biscuit Recipe by Tom

Have you been searching for a delectable treat? Well, this mouth-watering recipe will be sure to amaze your taste buds. This delicious cookie was invented by the mums and their children to send to the people in World War I. They are an ideal treat for ANZAC Day because we can remember the ANZACs who fought in World War I.

Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons of golden syrup
  • 1/2 cup of flour
  • 1/4 cup of caster sugar
  • 65g butter
  • 1 cup of oats
  • 1 tablespoon of water
  • 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda
  • 1/2 cup of coconut

Method:

  1. Before you start baking, it is very important to wash your hands.
  2. Next, turn on the oven and measure all of the ingredients.
  3. Then combine all of the dry ingredients in a large bowl.
  4. After that, put all of the wet ingredients in a separate bowl then, put that bowl in the microwave (make sure all of it has melted). Meanwhile, get out a tray.
  5. Take the wet ingredients and pour them into the bowl that has the dry ingredients.
  6. Mix the dry and wet ingredients together and make small balls. Flatten them out and put them on a tray.
  7. Put the tray in the oven, wait about 20 minutes, take the tray out and enjoy!
