Learning and Teaching

Learning Space 1 Juniors

In Learning Space 1, we have been learning how to write a Procedural text.  To help us understand how to write a Procedure, we made a Biscuit Face and then wrote about it. Here are some pictures of us with our Biscuit Faces.

STEM: The Fastest Ramp!

As part of a Maths investigation, some Senior students applied their knowledge on angles to build a toy car or toy skateboard to travel down the ramp the fastest. They were encouraged to be creative in the choice of their materials and needed to measure the angle of each ramp.

The students used critical thinking, communication, and collaboration to build their ramps and also followed an Engineering Design Process. This involved learning the value of rethinking and supporting multiple solutions.

Clinic 1 Mathematics - Shape

Over the last two weeks the children in Clinic 1 have been investigating 3D objects. They have explored the properties of 3D objects - their faces, edges and vertices - and also made connections between 3D objects and 2D Shapes.

As part of their learning children were  asked to create a 3D object of their choice and identify its properties. They then had fun decorating their shape.

Well done Andi
Well done Andi

On a different note, we just want to mention Andi Mole's achievement in School Sport Victoria (Basketball and Football- AFL). In Basketball, over 100 girls are trying to compete and make the team and represent Victoria against other states. Andi has made it to Stage three trials and they only chose 10 girls to represent Victoria. In addition to the AFL trials Andi has made the final 48 girls for the U12 side that will play a game at Trevor Barker Oval.

Good Luck Andi, we can not wait to see what happens next.

Congratulations Anthony on 25 years of teaching!

Some Senior students from Learning Space 1 Senior interviewed Anthony to find out some of the highlights of his teaching career.

What is your role at SFS?

I’m a Senior Home Group teacher, and I also wear many other hats of responsibility when required.

How does it feel to reach 25 years in your teaching career?

Very old! I always thought I would be wearing a cardigan and still using chalkboards after twenty-five years. However, education has come a long way since those days and it’s continually changing too.

Why did you want to become a teacher?

I was inspired by the passion from my teachers and their innovative ways of connecting with the students. They also had a great sense of humour and this made learning fun.

What was your first grade?

A Grade 6 class with 33 students all crammed into one portable. There were only two computers for the entire class to use and they were very slow. The teachers also used chalkboards in those days, so I had duster monitors that were responsible for removing all the chalk dust.

What has been the funniest moment in your teaching career?

In 1999, I was asked to take the Grade 6 students for a hike at a country camp.

The camp owners gave me a map to use as there was no Google Maps back then.

The hiking trail took us straight past the local abattoirs and the smell was horrendous! However, the map couldn’t show this of course.

You mentioned that you wear other “hats” of responsibility when required. What’s one other hat of responsibility that you’ve enjoyed wearing?

In Term 2 of 2010, I was the ICT Coordinator and a teacher at one of the new schools at the time. One day a Minister for Education called Julia Gillard came to visit the school to present some new flags for the school. I was in the middle of giving her a demonstration on how the new computers worked when suddenly she was called away to travel to Canberra. The next day she became Australia's 27th Prime Minister and the first woman to hold the office. So I enjoyed being part of that historical moment.

What have been some of the challenges of your teaching career?

I’ve been a foundational teacher at two new Catholic schools. It’s a HUGE challenge because everything is new and there are many firsts that need to take place in order to build that new school community. Very much like how SFS had to grow when it first opened.

What have been some of your achievements at SFS?

Introducing Seesaw, Facebook and Instagram to the school community. All these platforms have greatly helped to strengthen that connection between the school and SFS community. Sometimes to bring about change you have to do things differently. Introducing fishing as an activity at the Year 5/6 Portsea Camp has also been a highlight. Watching the students catch fish, have their photos taken, and release the fish is a great win-win for the environment.

What advice would you give someone that would like to become a teacher?

Teaching is a calling that is more than just a vocation. You are given the responsibility of creating awareness as well as opening the minds of people by instilling values, morals, and ethics.
