Teaching and Learning

Upcoming Excursions

We have two excursions coming up in June.

The first excursion is for students in Year 3-6 for Winter Sports. This event is being held in Colbinabbin and Mr Collins will drive a mini-bus to transport the students. The cost of the excursion is $10 per student, which will partly cover the bus hire and fuel. The school will also make a co-contribution.

We have a  whole school excursion to Bridgewater Primary School on Friday June 16th. We will be joined by students from Inglewood Primary School and Bridgwater Primary School and participate in a range of first aid related activities. We will be traveling by mini bus to and from this event and the cost is $10 per child.

(Those families with CSEF funds that are not being  used for camp, may elect to pay for these excursions, using these funds, just let Bree in the office know that this is your intention).

Lions Public Speaking Competition

Our local (school based competition) will be held on Thursday June 22nd at 2pm. I am currently  organising an independent, but familiar-faced judging panel and will announce this panel soon. We are happy to have families come along to listen and watch on the day. Each of our Year 3's will speak followed by our Year 5 and 6 students.

Winners of our school final will be invited to speak at the East-Loddon Lions final on Tuesday July 18th in the early evening. Spectators are invited (in fact encouraged) to attend and once we know who are finalist are, I will ask for the numbers of people attending. Please reach out if you have any questions or concerns.

News from Mrs Lightburn

The grade has been busy learning about Chemical Sciences (how things change) as part of our Investigations. Students have been able to identify what objects are made from and how different substances can change if heat or coldness is added.

News from the Year 3-6 Room

At Raywood Primary we continue to promote student voice and agency in the classroom. This week Link displayed student agency by planning and delivering a 1-hour lesson on Minecraft Education. Link and I sat together during class to plan his lesson and develop a series of instructions that would be challenging for the other students without being impossible. For this to happen Link had to donate an extensive amount of his own time to building the world that the lesson took place in. At the end of the lesson, the kids had created their own names out of varied products that would appear in the world and also worked out how to use different elements from the periodic table to create new items. To say that the kids enjoyed themselves would be a massive understatement. We thank Link for his organisation and patience with both the kids and the teachers during the lesson.

As part of our Integrated Studies, we have been learning about Solids, Liquids and Gases. The students were asked to replicate the molecules in each of the substances (using Cherios) to demonstrate their understanding of how the molecules behave in each.

Students also participated in a Lemon Volcano Experiment- this demonstrated how a chemical reaction took place between an acid (lemon juice) and a base (bi-carbonate soda). They were then asked to write a procedural text about what they did.

ART

We trust that our Mums loved their Mother's Day Cards- the students were challenged by this activity, but we all agree that they came up a treat!

We have been busy learning about printing over the past few art sessions. Students have each created two pieces of work which depict a bushfire and another after the bushfire. We used different printing methods such as stamping using a range of materials and stencilling.

Outdoor Education

Last week we were very fortunate to receive a donation of seedlings that we have now planted into our vegetable gardens. Hopefully in coming months we will be harvesting lettuce, spinach, radishes, spring onions, cabbage and some other mystery seedlings- as they were not labelled and we have had to use our best identification skills to ascertain what we are planting! As you can see from the pictures below the students all worked hard to prepare the garden beds, plant and water their future crops.

Kelly Sports

Athletics was on the menu this week for our Friday Kelly Sports session. Our students are really enjoying these sessions.

MARC News

In todays session we are very fortunate to be visited by Lorena Carrington, a photographic illustrator. She will lead the children through some activities and share with them her experiences of being an illustrator. Look out for pictures and updates on our school
