Assistant Principals' Report
National Reconciliation Week
Reconciliation Week is an annual event that takes place from the 27th of May to the 3rd of June in Australia. These two dates commemorate the successful 1967 referendum (27th May 1967) and the High Court Mabo decision (3rd June 1992) which are two significate events in journey of reconciliation with Australia’s First Nation people.
The theme for National Reconciliation Week 2023, Be a Voice for Generations, encourages all Australians to be a voice for reconciliation in tangible ways in our everyday lives – where we live, work and socialise.
National Reconciliation Week (NRW) is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.
Reconciliation Week provides an opportunity to reflect on and appreciate the rich heritage of the oldest living culture in the world of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. It enables us to celebrate the history and achievements of Indigenous people, while also acknowledging the deep injustices of the past and the ongoing struggles that Indigenous people still face.
Reconciliation Week provides an excellent opportunity for us to be reminded of the Indigenous culture, such as storytelling, art, dance, music and their deep love and connection to country. It enables Indigenous Australians to see their culture and heritage acknowledged, celebrated, and valued.
Reconciliation Week creates the space for us to reflect upon painful past, injustices and atrocities that white settlement has imposed upon Indigenous communities in the hope that they will never be repeated. By recognising past injustices, we can foster a deeper understanding and empathy towards the experiences of Indigenous Australians
Celebrating reconciliation Week creates the space for dialogue, collaboration, truth telling and mutual respect to promotes healing and unity among all Australians for brighter and more equitable future.
Exams and GAT information
Our Semester Exams are just around the corner. Year 10 and 11 students had an assembly where exam information was distributed and went over some studying tips. Some reminders include: making a study timetable, reviewing notes, attempting practice questions and tasks, asking the teacher for help with any gaps in your knowledge, or if feeling a bit unsure about the upcoming exam. Reaching out to teachers, family and friends is also a good idea during exam time, as they can help with study plans or act as a comforting presence during a particularly stressful period.
The General Achievement Test (GAT) is also nearing, it will be held on Thursday 15th of June. Section A is to be completed by all students enrolled in VCAL and Unit 3/4 VCE and/or VCE VET scored subjects and assesses skills against literacy and numeracy standards, which will indicate whether students have demonstrated the literacy and numeracy skills typically expected of someone completing their secondary schooling. Section B is to be completed by all students enrolled in Unit 3/4 VCE and/or VCE VET scored subjects only and assesses skills in mathematics, science, technology, the arts and humanities. An English/Bilingual printed dictionary and scientific calculator is permitted in both sections of the GAT- students are reminded to bring their own calculator. Students should attempt every question in Section A and B of the GAT.
