Teaching and Learning

Annual Principal's Conference

On Thursday and Friday last week, Marika, Liam and I attended the  annual Riversdale Principal's Conference.

We were fortunate to attend a presentation by Professor Di Siemen. Di Siemon has been involved with mathematics teacher education for over 30 years. As a Professor of Mathematics Education at RMIT University she has led a number of large-scale research projects focussed on the development of number ideas and strategies in years F to 9 with a particular emphasis on the use of performance-based assessment tasks to identify learning needs and inform teaching.

Di's presentation 'Targeting the 'big ideas' in Mathematics discussed the requirements of targeted teaching in Mathematics in the areas of:

  • Trusting the Count
  • Place Value
  • Multiplicative Thinking
  • Partitioning
  • Proportional Reasoning
  • Generalising

Writing Moderation at Rangeview

On Monday 8th May, a strange occurrence happened in our playground. A magical chair with wings appeared in the tree near the Level 1&2 playground. Our students were mesmerised and have discussed many theories as to how this may have happened.

With so many thought provoking ideas, students across all levels were asked to write a story titled 'The Chair' in a 45 minute session.

With almost 700 amazing narratives, our teachers have been hard at work reading the stories and in teams discussing the fabulous, creative writing of our students. In Week 5, all of our teaching staff will be meeting to look across all levels at the writing, discuss marking, moderate and celebrate our fantastic writers.

Reading Heroes

Reading Heroes is our fabulous new club running on Thursdays during B1 from 11.15am - 11.45am. This club is for students who love to read and would like a quiet place to do so in the break. Students are able to bring a book of their choice to the Level 2 Hub and read quietly, supervised by a staff member.

Cyber Safety

Last week we were excited to welcome back the team from the Cyber Safety Project for a series of engaging incursions on Wednesday and Thursday. Our students from Foundation to Level 6, had a fabulous time working with Kiah to equip students with essential skills and knowledge they need to be safe and responsible digital citizens when online or using digital technologies.

On Wednesday afternoon, all staff took part in an 1 hour workshop with the Cyber Safety Project to further look at strategies to keep our children safe in the ever-changing online world.

A huge thank you to Mr Steve Atkinson for organising such a fabulous learning experience for all

Farewell

On Monday 8th May, we held a morning tea to wish Janis Roworth farewell. Janis has worked at Rangeview Primary School as a Casual Relief Teacher since 2010 and has worked across all levels and specialist areas in our school. The care and compassion Janis has shown our students over the many years has been outstanding and I'm sure you will agree she will be missed by all. We would like to wish Janis well in her exciting move to New Zealand to be closer to family.
