Mothers Day Stall at Buninyong - Friday 12th May

This Friday (12th May) we will have our Mother’s Day Stall. This year, we will start the day at Buninyong and attend the stall there. This will also provide us with the opportunity to use the gym, visit the library and spend some time with the Buninyong students. We will then bus back up to Scotsburn at recess.

At the Mothers’ Day Stall, students will be offered the opportunity to purchase one gift for $5. After all grades have been through, an announcement will be put over for any students who may wish to purchase additional gifts to come and do so.

Don’t forget to send $5 with your child to Buninyong on Friday morning!

Mothers’ Day Afternoon Tea - Monday 15th May

With it becoming a bit of a tradition over the past few years, we will be hosting another Mothers’ Day Afternoon Tea celebration for all of our mothers and special friends. The afternoon will take place the day after Mother’s Day, Monday 15th May. All mums and special friends should hope to receive their personal invitation from their child in the coming days. We would love all mums and special friends to come and attend between the time of 2:30pm and 3:30pm, with food and hot drinks provided.

VSSS and Division Cross Country

Good luck to our division cross country participants and Victorian State School Spectacular dancers on Friday. We are sure you will have lots of fun and give your best efforts.

Scotsburn Kitchen Official Opening

After 18 months of planning, funding and installation, we now have our brand new fully functioning kitchen at the Scotsburn Campus. To celebrate this, we are going to hold an official grand opening on Friday 19th May at 1pm. This will replace our Scotsburn Assembly for the day.

In attendance we will have Bernie, two Community Bank Buninyong directors, Michael Anderson who was our contracted joiner, as well as a few other members of the community. We will have our students cooking up a storm as part of our Family Group program, then acting as waiters for our guests.

A major part of getting this kitchen project up and running, was the connection to and involvement from the community. We are really hopeful that we can get as many parents and members of the community to the opening, to really celebrate this as a genuine community facility. Please spread the word and put the date in your calendar!

Scotsburn Breakfast Club

Our first Scotsburn Breakfast Club last Thursday certainly went off with a bang! The kitchen was full of hungry bellies with the strong smell of raisin toast permeating in the air. We will be ready and raring once again this Thursday morning.

A massive thank you to our parent helpers who volunteered their time to assist - we could not have this program up and running without you!

Mr Walsh’s Italian Kitchen

Another great example of the kitchen getting a workout is during our Family Group sessions on Fridays, where Mr Walsh’s Italian Kitchen is doing a roaring trade. This week, students prepared, cooked and served ham and cheese pinwheels. Beautiful!

During these sessions, students are also developing personal skills including using teamwork, food handling safety and eating and serving food together demonstrating appropriate manners.

Scotsburn Assembly Recap

Congratulations to our Scotsburn Award Winners last week. You have all demonstrated wonderful learning behaviours both in and out of the classroom. It was also wonderful to finally present our running and jumping ribbons from last term’s 3-6 Athletics Day. We had a large number of amazing performances - well done champions!

We were so proud of all the students in SC1 who got up and presented their dream catchers and were inspired by your imaginative dreams! As a Scotsburn Campus, we value all students being brave and getting out of their comfort zone, and it was brilliant to see all students demonstrate this.

Thanks to all of the parents who were in attendance. The students love having you there and it really builds our strong sense of community. It was also great to see parents hanging around afterwards for a warm drink and a catch up. We would love to see more of this!

Author Study

Wonder White Bread Bag Recycle

We are participating in the Wonder White initiative in recycling bread bags! This is a wonderful chance for our school community to participate in a sustainable practice that helps our environment, while earning rewards for our school. For every 5kg of bread bags we collect our school earns 500 points that can be used for purchasing sports equipment. We have a collection box situated in the old building, so let's start collecting as many bread bags as we can! The rule of thumb is that if the bag contains some sort of bread (including rolls etc.) it is a soft plastic and can be recycled!

SC1 Learning Snapshot

What a busy start to week 3. Students were amazed by the production of puppet theatre, A Black Canvas on Monday as part of our incursion. Students had the opportunity to design, create and then bring to life their own shadow puppets. We look forward to continuing on our light and sound learning journey as part of our term inquiry.

Today students are visiting the Buninyong Kindergarten as part of our transition program. Students love the experience of going back to kinder, playing, and making friends with children who will be embarking on their transition journey shortly. Our students provide a great snapshot of what school life entails for kindergarten students.

Please remember to send your child’s reader pouch to school each day so we can check home reading and pass on reading goals for your child to practise at home. We strongly encourage home reading and know this routine makes a huge difference in your child’s reading growth and learning journey.

SC2 Learning Snapshot

In another busy week for SC2, students commenced their new book ‘The Lost Whale’ in Reading, consolidating their visualising skills in the process. The engagement throughout the first 4 chapters of the story has been fantastic with students already showing some great inferential skills in the process.

Students have been engaging in some thoughtful Writer’s Notebook entries, consisting of creating characters and settings whilst drawing on their favourite books and movies to inspire them along the way. This will aid the students when they commence the planning of their narratives this week. SC2 also engaged in a terrific warmup write with Mr Mould, involving them receiving a character for them to base their free-write stories on (see below).

Many SC2 students played host as they set the tables, served and waited on SC1 and SC3 students during our family group rotations on Friday, well done!

SC3 Learning Snapshot

Term 2 is well and truly underway, with SC3 right into the thick of their learning foci for the term. Last week, we started reading the book “The Happiest Refugee” by Ahn Do, as part of our inquiry theme, Destination Diversity. This text is providing the students with lots of opportunities to develop their reading comprehension skills, as well as stimulate discussions around empathy and understanding.

Our writing for the first three weeks has been focusing on poetry, and we seem to have uncovered some talented poets! This unit will culminate in a Poetry Slam piece, which will allow the students to perform a poem full of emotion and energy.

Our Bluelight DASH program is also flying along, and the students are loving the program. There has been a big focus in the program this week and last week on values, community and personal strength. In the next few weeks, the program is planning to run a parent information afternoon, so keep an eye out for that.

Physical Education Learning Snapshot

In Physical Education SC1 have been focusing on developing the skills of underarm throwing and catching. This has seen students complete a range of activities including target throwing, catching challenges and pass to pass.

SC2 has continued to work on skipping. Students have been learning a range of jump rope tricks including the hopscotch jump and the can. Shortly students will move into punting (AFL kicking) and soccer skills.

Hockey has been the focus on SC3. Students have been focusing on the specialised skills of hockey, including trapping and passing. Students will continue to work on these skills until the end of term where they will begin to play modified games of hockey.

Performing Arts Learning Snapshot

SC1 has been learning about the skills of performing by playing mini games including charades.

SC2 and SC3 have been creating a play in small groups. This is a project that will go all term. Over the next two weeks students will focus on creating a mask for their character and creating props.

STEM Learning Snapshot

In Term 2 the focus for the Grade Prep students will be living and nonliving things. This week students conducted a scavenger hunt of living and nonliving things around our school. Thai saw us find a range of living things including Honey the therapy dog.

In STEM the SC1 and the Grade 1/2 students have been focusing on the parts of plants. Students planted small seedlings and seeds over the course of the term and we'll watch them grow.

SC2 and SC3 students looked at the functions of a heart. Students created a model of a heart using recycled materials.

SC2 students have also been focusing on researching an animal. Students have been focusing on the animals' habitat and well as its adaptations. Thai will be a project they will be focusing on for most of the term.

SC3 had an incursion this week on Electricity. A representative from Earth Ed came to Scotsburn to teach students about electrical circuits. We had lots of fun!

Japanese Learning Snapshot

こどものひおめでとう！ Kodomo no hi omedetou! Happy Children’s Day!

On Friday, May 5th we celebrated Children’s Day and last week’s Japanese lessons were centred around this theme. We made こいのぼり (Koinobori or carp streamers) and also played a traditional Children’s Day game of Jan Ken Pon (rock paper scissors) with origami Kabuto (Samurai Helmets), in which the winner of each round takes a kabuto from their opponent. Our target language included the following:

SC1 - Douzo (there you go) and arigatou (thank you) for the passing and receiving of Kabuto.

SC2- Yatta (I did it!) plus Douzo and Arigatou.

SC3- Yoku dekimashita (well done) plus Yatta, Douzo and Arigatou.

I encourage you to play this game at home, as it was a lot of fun!
