English - Term Two 2023

Reading and Viewing:

Initialit has been in full swing this term with students carrying out lessons on Comprehension, Grammar and expanding their vocabulary during Storybook lessons. Students have worked on making connections between themselves, text and the world. They are currently working on activating their prior knowledge to visualise what is happening in a non fiction text. Students have been participating in independent reading sessions to build their reading stamina and increase their accuracy and fluency.

Writing:

To assist our students with their Writing, Initialit 2 has a heavy focus on Spelling. Students are learning that there are two main components to the English language. The first is phonemes, or the way words sound when we hear them. The second is graphemes which are the letters used to make the words. Students have been learning that not all phonemes are made up using the same grapheme combinations by focusing on increasingly complex digraphs.

Speaking and Listening:

Students have been working on giving and receiving feedback to each other. This has also linked in with our Respectful Relationships lessons where students learnt about what it takes to be an active listener. Students explored how non-verbal cues such as making eye contact and the way your body is positioned can affect how the level of listening is received by another person. During comprehension sessions, students have been learning how to sandwich feedback to their peers while completing partner reading activities. This also requires the listener to receive and apply the feedback given to improve their learning.

Scienceworks Excursion

As part of our Inquiry unit 'Forces', on Tuesday 24th of May went on our Scienceworks excursion. We participated in many different activities and had a fantastic day. Thank you very much to our wonderful parent helpers who helped us make this day such a great success.

Inquiry Parachute Design and Testing

As part of our Inquiry unit 'Forces' students have been designing and making parachutes. They have learnt about and discussed wind, gravity and air resistence, then reflected upon this to design their parachute. The goal was to design a parachute that stayed in the air the longest. It was so much fun testing our designs.

Take Home Readers

As part of InitiaLit-2, students have free-choice of short and extended chapter books to take home and read. Year Two students are able to choose up to four readers from school to take home weekly and read nightly. Students in Year Two are also free to choose books from home to read each night if they wish. Students who choose their readers on a Monday are required to return them the following Monday. After reading, please record the name of the book in the InitiaLit Home Reading Diary for the day.
