InitiaLit

In term two, we are learning to read new tricky words every week and are working hard to decode unfamiliar words within our reading. Tricky Words should be practiced until they are automatically recognised as they cannot be sounded out like other words. We have also learnt new songs to help us remember how to identify tricky words such as 'because'. We also know that every word that we read and write must have a vowel letter. Did you know that the letter 'y' is sometimes a vowel? This week the students have been learning how to add a suffix to a base word.

Writing

During writing lessons, the students have been working specifically on narrative type writing. Our students have learnt about the structure of a narrative and they now know what needs to be included throughout their writing pieces. The students know that in the beginning of a story, the characters and the setting must be introduced. Then in the middle of the story, students need to introduce the audience to the problem and at the end they need to find a resolution. It has been great to see the students willing to read their pieces of writing out to the class. The improvement in their writing has been amazing to see. We are now moving onto persuasive writing and how we can persuade a reader to believe in our opinions.

Take Home Readers

Each week, your child will be provided with one hard copy reader to read for the week. We ask that the book is read 2-3 times per week and is logged into your child’s reading diary.

If you would like to read an extra book for the week, your child may login to the MultiLit eLibrary using an electronic device. The eLibrary uses a browser-based platform, so books can be read on desktop computers or mobile devices (including smartphones and tablets). You will find the link to this website and your child’s login details at the front of their reading diary. Alternatively, your child may choose to read a ‘good fit’ book of their choice instead.

Your child’s reading diary and book needs to be brought back to school every Friday morning to be checked and swapped over by your child’s classroom teacher. We kindly ask that all books are taken care of and returned in good condition every Friday.
