Music Matters

A big congratulations to all who were involved in last week’s Twilight Concert. It was so gratifying to be able to have this concert even though Sydney was under renewed restrictions. Having the concert earlier and outdoors certainly worked in our favour. As we return to performance we look to ease our own restrictions to the point of returning to a somewhat normal routine. We hope that vaccines and careful management will help in this return. Having said that we were delighted to have around 100 people attend the concert and amazingly we had around 230 “hits” online. I also had reports of grandparents and family watching the concert from the country and even overseas. Certainly we want people to come into the school but the success of streaming might be here to stay.

Special mention of James Baldock from Year 12 who was presented at the Concert and at Assembly as the 2021 Performing Arts Captain. James has already showed his leadership skills as the MC for both music concerts this year. We look forward to his continued leadership in this role and his inspiration for all things performing arts at St Pius X.

As for future performances, for many reasons, the Term 3 Twilight Concert has now been combined with the annual HSC Showcase Splinters, Splashes, Stage and Sounds presentation. Typically this has been an occasion where our senior performing arts students have been farewelled and a presentation has been made to each student. While details of the night are still being decided the aim is to have a senior focus on this night. As soon as final details have been decided more information will be provided regarding this night.

Our Drama Climate Change Project is in the final stages of filming and editing. We look to present these films at a special screening. Again, the final stages of any filming can be time consuming so we are looking at a Term 3 presentation. Well done to these boys and Ms Lindley who were presented at Assembly earlier this week.

Congratulations to Anthony Elliott who was placed first in the U/19 Novice Brass Solo Section of the Sydney Metropolitan Solo Competition on the weekend.  He also placed 3rd in the Slow Melody Section.  Well done and congratulations for all your hard work and preparation.

Well done to the following Performing Arts students who have contributed positively to their ensembles this week:

Drama Matters

HSC Drama students

The HSC Drama students had a 4-hour workshop with an industry professional where they worked extensively on their Major Work: Group Project. Each year students wrestle with their ideas and try to put them onstage in an entertaining and practical way. Playbuilding, or devising, as it is also called, is probably one of the hardest forms of creating theatre. Students must collaborate, improvise, write and edit an original piece of theatre into a complete theatrical journey lasting between 8-12 minutes. Each actor or character needs their ‘moment’ and students must also work as an ensemble. Here are some photos from their workshop. They will continue to work on this project until mid-August and have assessments along the way until their HSC practical examination.

Climate Movie: Ocean Room

On Sunday the actors and crew from the Ocean Room movie came to the College to film in the gym. We have been blessed to have this large space which can be manipulated with smoke and lights to great effect. The crew did a great job at creating an underwater ‘look’ and the actors certainly looked the part. Costumes were made, stage make-up was applied and a movie was made! Please enjoy the photos from the shoot.
