Year 10 Reflection Day #2

Year 10 spent Friday 14 May at Oxford Falls participating in their second Reflection Day. The focus of the day was 'Journey' and 'Relationships'. Year 10 understand that this year for them is one of growing in maturity and part of this maturity involves understanding the many relationships that we are part of and how to develop these relationships positively.

Mr Sam Di Sano provided the initial input into Journey and Relationships, using scripture to open our eyes to assist us to better understand these concepts. Journeys can take many forms and growing up to adulthood is a journey that we all need to take. Some experiences can be positive, others not so positive. As for our relationships, students came to understand what causes problems in some relationships and why other relationships seem to work so well. Biblical references pointed to Christ providing the example that positive relationships are characterised by mercy, love and putting others first.

Our external input for the day was provided by Mr Brett Hunt: musician, song writer and story teller. Brett used his own life experiences to educate and entertain Year 10 in the finer points of relationships through his performance called “Building Bridges”. Brett’s own life, characterised by a family dealing with a father’s experience as a soldier in Vietnam as well as his journey through the music industry as performer, provides a brilliant backdrop from which students learnt how to build strong relationships with those around us.

Our day concluded with Mr Rick Russo taking Year 10 through a guided meditation experience to demonstrate to students how they themselves can assist their work and life with relaxation techniques.

Thank you to all staff who contributed on the day to provide the young men of Year 10 a great day to reflect upon their life, while providing a small time out from study as they grow in their time at St Pius.

Chapel Mass

Thanks to Miss van Riet’s Year 9 RE Class for hosting this week’s Chapel Mass. Fr David celebrated our Eucharistic Celebration that focused upon the disciples preparing to go out and spread the Good News. In this week leading up to Pentecost Sunday we recognise the work of the Holy Spirit, not just in the disciples at the time of Jesus, but in our own lives as well today.

We look forward to our next Chapel Mass on 31 May which will be hosted by Mr Brannan’s Year 9  RE Class.

SPX Winter Appeal: Supporting St Vincent de Paul and Jesuit Refugee Services

Week 6 marks the start of our annual SPX Winter Appeal, with the College collecting goods for St Vincent de Paul and Jesuit Refugee Services. In this difficult time, those in need have found themselves pushed further onto the fringes of society, with many volunteer organisations not able to cater for those who are less fortunate. Students are encouraged to consider the plight of those around us, and to act by 'giving to the poor in handfuls'.

Driven by Year 9, the Appeal will run from Monday, 24 May until Thursday, 10 June (Week 8, Day 4). Student volunteers will be collecting goods during Homeroom. We are in need of the following items:

Mr Ryan Balboa - Social Justice Coordinator
