National Reconciliation Week

Thursday marks the beginning of National Reconciliation Week across Australia.

National Reconciliation Week (NRW) is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how everyone can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.

This year’s theme is ‘More than a word. Reconciliation takes action’. National Reconciliation Week runs from 27 May to 3 June.

The students at the Bundoora Campus have planned to participate in a Reconciliation Walk on Friday and Watsonia students at a later day however both of these will depend on the Departments Covid Guidelines.

Throughout this week classes have been reading different stories and learning some traditional sporting games. In Upper Primary they read the story Big Rain Coming which was about waiting for the rain to come to an isolated Aboriginal community. It looks at how the clouds thicken and grow dark while everybody waits.

Exploring this book prompted the class to ‘Make Rain’, which provided a stimulus for writing and also gave a context for students to learn about the Aboriginal landscape within the story.

Via the link https://nrw.reconciliation.org.au/calendar you can explore some local community events for National Reconciliation Week, unfortunately some may change with the current Covid restrictions.
