COVID Safety Update

I hope this Newsletter finds you and your family safe and healthy. Unfortunately I am writing about  COVID Safety once again and, as you know, the advice can change frequently.

The Victorian Government yesterday announced new directions to prevent the spread of COVID-19. As a result, today Friday 28th May is a Pupil-Free Day and remote and flexible learning will be provided from next Monday 31st May to Thursday 3rd June inclusive.

Please note that you will receive an email from your section Team Leader in regard to the provision of online learning including class meetings.

Presentation Ball

The Year 12 Presentation Ball was held on the evening of Friday, 14th May. This very special Ball was for the 2020 year 11 students who were unable to have the Ball last year due to COVID-19.

The Ball was a spectacular success and the wait was well and truly worth it. The Ball was held at The Centre Ivanhoe for the first time and this magnificent room, with its grand art deco design, provided the perfect venue for the 35 students who were presented to their family, friends, staff, students and ex-students. They all did themselves, their families and the school proud.

Some of the students started with us in Prep and they celebrated their amazing journey through the school. A very big thank you goes to all our Secondary 11-12 staff for their tireless work in organising the evening.

The good news is that we get to do it all again on Friday, 27th August with our Year 11 students.

National Reconciliation Week

This week is National Reconciliation Week. It is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared history, cultures and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation.

At Concord we pride ourselves on our inclusive practices and take this opportunity to reflect on the deep significance of National Reconciliation Week. The timing of the week is framed by two landmark events:

  • the 1967 national referendum in which more than 90 per cent of Australians voted ‘Yes’ to include Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the census and allow the Commonwealth Government to create laws for them
  • the anniversary of the 1992 High Court of Australia Mabo decision, named after Eddie Mabo, the man who fought for recognition of the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the traditional owners of their land and waters.

Concord School has a strong commitment to Aboriginal inclusion. This includes recognising Aboriginal culture as the world’s oldest continuous living culture, and the important role of Traditional Owners and Elders in our communities. Our Koorie students recently particicpated in a camp to Blackwood and there will be Reconciliation Walk at the Bundoora Campus this Friday.

School Communication and the use of Compass

It is important that all parents log into Compass so our school can communicate effectively with you. If you have any questions regarding Compass, or are having difficulty in logging-on, then please ring Karen Jordan at our school on 94673972. The Compass log-on can be found at https://concordsch-vic.compass.education or through the ‘Compass Parent Portal’ link on our website.

Principal Award-  Jett Fabris

Jett has been working very hard during his literacy and numeracy sessions. It has been fantastic to see him develop a ‘just give it a go!’ work attitude this semester. We are very proud of Jett’s willingness to begin his work and has set a great example as Class Captain in UPE.

Jett is becoming quite the author and he has been proud to write detailed recounts of the language experience explored by his class each week in Term 2.
