Laser Tag Social Event

To celebrate the end of a long term, the Year 12s went to Willetton for three games of laser tag last Friday evening.  Joined by Mr Claes in the “war zones”, the class was divided into three groups as they waged battle in the dark.  The peace-loving Mrs Au and Mrs Pereira remained outside to observe the proceedings. After three games, the students and teachers had dinner before heading home.

ALIA National Simultaneous Storytime 2021

Article by Anastasia Dunn, Year 9 Journalism Class

A story about space, read by an astronaut from space. What a cool idea for this year’s ALIA National Simultaneous Storytime.

On May 19, American astronaut Shannon Walker read Give Me Some Space to almost two million students in Australia and New Zealand. This annual simultaneous reading is organised by the Australian Library and Information Association and has become increasingly popular over the years.

The Year 1s and 2s of The King’s College got a preview of the story when Mrs Tania Holland read the book to them the day before, and they loved it.

Said Janvi Jinu from Year 1, “It was a cool story, I like the planet, and I like space.” She rated the book 10/10 and said, “loved it.

Added another Year 1 student Chloe Mullally, “Yep, I loved the story. I liked it because it was a good story, and I liked Mrs Holland reading the story.”

This is the second year Mrs Holland has decided to participate in this program as “it’s fun and it’s an Australian author and this year they had colouring competitions.”

The aim of reading books chosen by ALIA is to promote reading, Australian writers and provide opportunities to involve parents, grandparents and media. Reading Give Me Some Space can bring people together and promote how fun stories are to be read.

Year 9 Outdoor Education

Miss Salmond’s Year 9 Outdoor Education class have spent the last few weeks developing their mountain biking skills and were able to explore some of the Kwinana Loop Trail last week. The students demonstrated some great techniques riding through different terrains and worked very well, improving their group management.

The Year 10 students have been learning how to make and cook on wood fires as an introduction to camp cooking. Over the last few weeks, they have created a meal plan and been able to cook their own food during class. Some students were very creative with their cooking techniques and were able to apply some of what they have learnt with Mrs Griffin in Food Technology.

Going green!

Last Friday we had a “Waste Audit” incursion with the Year 6s in the undercover area.

Belinda Bloxome from Waste Wise will be coming to The King’s College to show us how to audit our rubbish. Importantly this helps us establish a baseline as to what rubbish we generate, which will then form the basis to prioritise ongoing recycling and waste wise initiatives.  We will then be one step closer to becoming a Waste Wise accredited school, enabling us to be eligible to apply for significant government grants.

Our wonderful secondary Environment Club has also signed up our school to the Wonder Recycling Drive, recycling plastic bread bags and tags, running until June 25, 2021.

These are exciting times and huge steps forward in the effort to educate our students, families and community to become more conscious of reducing landfill.

A Sweet Saturday Treat

Studying Modern History ATAR does have its rewards, as Daniel Ramos, Glen Strachan, and Josiah Villaflor will attest. After attending a revision seminar on May 15 (a Saturday) at Notre Dame University in Fremantle, the Year 12 students had lunch and dessert. The seminar focused on content and skills the students will need to study Russia and the Soviet Union.

World Wellbeing Week

21 to 25 June

"Organisations with a positive mental health and safety approach have seen increased productivity, improved engagement and can better recruit and retain talented people." Instinct and Reason (2014) Heads up Initiative: Employer of Choice Study. Melbourne: Beyond Blue.

We take wellbeing seriously at The King's College and want to ensure wherever possible that our college community are healthy and happy. As part of this commitment, the College staff will participate in World Wellbeing Week from 21 to 25 June.  Staff will have some fun learning how to build a healthy lifestyle, enjoy student-led worship, sample some healthy snacks, and give back by supporting Beyond Blue charity.

In Semester Two, the Wellbeing Team will continue to work on ways to bolster our College health and resilience.
