Student Voice

On The Beat

The Year 9 Journalism students have been very busy the past two terms. In addition to contributing articles to this newsletter, they make a weekly recording of the College’s upcoming events on KCFM, the school’s radio station.  A group of them have also started a weekly podcast called "Life@The College".  Please click the button below to catch these wonderful and creative Year 9s on air!

Navigating NAPLAN

During the week starting 11 May (Week 4 of this term), the Year 7s and 9s had to complete the annual NAPLAN (National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy).  Here are what some of them said about their experience.

“It was challenging for my brain!” – Madison, Year 9
“I think I did the best I could, so we’ll have to see” – Abbey, Year 9
“Good! It felt like primary school.” – Piper, Year 7.

Asked what was the most challenging part of their NAPLAN:

“The writing was probably the most challenging part. I didn’t like that” – Charlotte, Year 9.

Parliament House Lunch

Article by Nyasha Maiwasha, Year 10 Student Councillor

On Tuesday 15 June some of The King's College Student Councillors took a trip of 37.4km and visited Parliament House. The tour guide spoke about its history and showed us around.  While there we visited the lower house of Parliament. In the lower house, the majority government sits on the left side of the Speaker.

Anyone can work in Parliament if they want to as long as you are an Australian citizen and have not been to jail for more than twelve months. They allow people over 18 to represent their electorate. They also encourage people from different cultures to work in Parliament to accurately represent the West Australian community.

We learned about the first women in Parliament. Her name was Edith Cowan. Her Women's Legal status Bill in 1923 improved the social issues of women. We had a three-course lunch with Mr Reece Whitby, a Member of Parliament. He told us what it is like to work in Parliament and explained how he began in politics.

Coming To Grips With Leadership:  GRIP Conference 2021

Article by Mrs Erin East, Head of Year 7

On Wednesday 19 May, the Years 7 to 12 student leaders set out to attend the GRIP Leadership Conference at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre. For the last three years, the College has attended this event to equip our young leaders with the confidence, motivation and inspiration to start making an active difference within the College community, and this year was no different.

The students were all eager to gain new perspectives and fresh ideas to positively impact the school. The conference gave students the tools to identify areas of opportunity and growth within the College, using examples of different initiatives and events held at other schools around Australia. The students then participated in elective sessions focusing on increasing participation in school activities and enduring through the different challenges and hardships that may be faced as a leader within their peer group.

Our students also had the opportunity to network with other young people from different schools around the Perth region, developing communication and teamwork skills as they shared ideas for future events to bring back to the College. We look forward to seeing our student leaders put their ideas and creativity into action in the coming term.
