Music

It is amazing what can happen in the space of a few weeks! Looking back over the last couple of weeks, we were entertained by the thoroughly enjoyable performances at the Instrumental Solo Soiree and String Soiree. The Autumn Concert was also held last week, which showcased ensembles from across the Senior School. For some ensembles this was the first time they had been able to perform to an audience since the very start of 2020.

As is the nature of the times we find ourselves in, the Music Department have been able to quickly move into running lessons and rehearsals on Teams. It has been a pleasure, and a real credit to their adaptability, seeing the girls seamlessly move into online rehearsals. I would also like to thank the Music staff for their work behind the scenes to quickly move into online teaching.

This week the Senior String Orchestra and Corelli Strings were scheduled to perform at the VSMF, due to the lockdown these performances have both been rescheduled. Once the dates and times have been confirmed we will communicate this to families.

AMEB exams that were originally scheduled for this week have also been rescheduled to start the week of Monday 12 July. While this is a student free day, please be mindful that some AMEB exams may be scheduled on Monday 12 July. Once we have the confirmed the details of these exams, we will promptly communicate them.

JS Performing Arts Showcase

The Junior School Performing Arts Showcase highlighted the diversity but also the affinity of the choral, instrumental, drama and dance programs in which students from Prep to Year 6 have been involved this semester. The students were guided by staff expertise to produce performances involving best practice in each discipline, such as from learning to follow a conductor to writing a script to even playing an oboe!

While staff and students were disappointed that we could not go live with the concert due to yet another lockdown, the Shelford community adhered to the old adage ‘the show must go on’ and suddenly we were making a movie! Whilst this was a different experience for us, the film will be a lifelong memento of a moment in history of keeping calm and carrying on in a pandemic. Well done, Junior School staff, students and families!
