As part of the Year 6 unit on Australian democracy, students went on a tour of the Victorian State Parliament.

What I learnt:

1. In the upper house there is a chair that was fit for the queen. Every 4 years the Governor General at an election sits in the chair. The queen sat in it in 1954.

2. There is a library at the parliament of Victoria. The library has lots of books about the laws and other democracy things.

3. When the gold rush hit, John George Knight gained enough gold to build the Parliament House now the parts of the building has real gold painted on. The only room that has fake gold is the foyer.

Today we went to state parliament and these are the things that I learnt there.

1. I learnt that in parliament they have a library where the politicians borrow books and if they don’t like the idea in the book they might debate about it, also their library makes you feel like you’re in Hogwarts

2. I learnt that at parliament it depends what room you’re in, but the seats are red or green and the tables and books are also red or green.

3. There is a room where there are paintings of the past Premiers of Victoria. And there was only one woman in the room that was painted.

1. I learnt that the eagle represents the Germany, the lion represents England and the unicorn Scotland.

2. The Mace got stolen in 1891, which was the second of the three and it hasn’t been found till this day and the reward is $50,000

3.The shortest period of a time for a premier in Victoria is just a few days

1. A mace I used to start a debate/ parliament discussion.

2. The lower House and the upper house are coloured coded red and green to signify the different uses of the rooms.

3. The lower house contains a large amount of real gold in the walls and the ceiling.
