Global Awareness
On Wednesday 5 May, members of the Global Awareness Action Team were lucky to attend the Youth4Youth Thinking Out Loud Forum on the Environment. They saw presentations from leaders of organisations such as Clean4Shore, Take 3 for the Sea and school strike for climate action. These are local people who have stepped up to really make a difference.
They heard about the impact that plastics and waste are having on our waterways, wildlife and climate and the importance of us all doing our part. They also learnt about the devastating effects the recent floods have had on our waterways, and how much rubbish is now floating in our rivers and oceans. They then took part in a workshop run by OZGreen.
This challenged them to think about issues they are passionate about and what changes they would like to see. They came up with an ‘ideal vision’ for the environment, and then examined their own carbon footprints.
They learnt that the average Australian has a carbon footprint that is bigger than that of 95% of the world’s population. If everybody consumed the same as us, we would need 5 planets to sustain life – not the one Earth we have.
The Global Awareness Action Team would like to challenge you all to think about the small changes you can make in your lives to help make a difference and reduce our impact.
The Global Awareness Action Team will be thinking of ways we as a school can play our part, however, one of the ways we can help now is to get behind the recycling programs the school currently runs.
- Bread Tags - we collect bread tags that go toward the Aussie Breadtags for Wheelchairs project.
- Return and Earn Drink containers for cans, poppers and plastic bottles.
- Texta and Pen Recycling
- Paper recycling
- Special Ed also recycle soft plastic food wrappers and collect food scraps for the worm farm and to feed the chickens.
