Debating

The Year 9 & 10 Debating Team took part in their first pool debate as part of the Premier's Debating Challenge on Thursday 20 May, 2021. The topic for the debate was "That students should have to carry a minimum of two STEM subjects throughout high school". Arguing for the negative, our team produced a strong team line that "mandating subjects only reduces opportunities for students, rather than increasing them". It was, however, the more difficult side of the debate to argue, and although we eventually lost to the friendly and enthusiastic team at Brisbane Water Secondary College, the students all learnt so much and are looking forward to the next debate.

A huge congratulations to Amelia Stevens, who was undoubtedly the standout speaker of the whole debate, and to her team mates Mason Bruinning, Hayden Starr and Emily Cui. It was the first debate in many years (or ever!) for all of our speakers and we are extremely proud of their exceptional effort and sportsmanship. They were a credit to the HKHS community.
