Girls' Hockey Report

The B Grade Blades and Scorchers met in another epic battle; this time the prize was a Grand Final berth. The conditions were appalling with driving rain all game and a top temperature of 8 degrees. Every player was so brave and gave their all right until the final whistle

Lizzie Duver opened the account for Blades with a clever goal on the post. Jordy Brown evened the score not long after with a great shot off a penalty corner. By half time it was impossible to pick a winner.

Lizzie Duver was the hero again for Blades scoring early in the second half and a goal to Milly Howells put the game beyond doubt. Scorchers earned a short corner late in the second half but unfortunately the shot missed by millimeters (story of their game!). Well done to the Scorchers on a great season and to their coaches James Russell and Charles Cain and managers Mark and Fiona Hermon. The girls should be very proud.

Better Players: Jordy Brown, Jorja Hermon, Millie Davidson, Emily Crawford, Kate Jessop and India Ross.

We wish Mrs Nichols and the Blades all the very best for their Grand Final 3:15pm on Saturday. Good luck also to the A Grade Strikers who play Friday night at 6:00pm. I know the girls would love lots of College support.

Under 16 Hockey

College Blue bowed out of the race in the Under 16 division last Saturday, going down 2-5 to Coleraine Black.  The team made a good start and scored the first goal but found it hard to sustain their team play as the game progressed.  Jack Wall scored that early goal and the second was added late in the game by Fergus Roberts.  Ferg has led the team very well during the season, providing stability and the ability to spread the ball from defence.  Despite the loss, this has been a very pleasing year for the youngest of our Under 16 teams.  They have played some fine hockey at times during the year and can look forward to developing further in 2020.

So - College Gold will carry the flag in this division in the Grand Final.  They would appreciate lots of support on Saturday morning, as would all our teams playing in Grand Finals next weekend.  Pedrina Park will be the place to be on Friday night and next Saturday.

See you there!

Hockey Dinner

A very large gathering will celebrate our teams’ seasons on Saturday.  The evening commences at 6.45pm in the Tim Murray Room.  Teams usually sit together and tables will be allocated accordingly; parents’ places are not allocated.  Please sit where you feel comfortable.  Dress is neat casual.  On arrival, please collect tokens so that the waiting staff know what sort of meal to serve each member of your family group.  These tokens will be in labelled envelopes at the door as you enter the Tim Murray Room.

It should be a good night!

Netball News

Many local leagues and clubs have been having their best and fairest counts, and it has been wonderful to see many of our students gaining votes.  While it is wonderful to be able to win awards, it is also important to value the idea of team, and understand that outstanding players are supported by ALL members of a team.  So while some of our students may only get one or two votes from the umpires or the club, they are still vital to create success. Hopefully they are also having a great time playing and training too!

Some outstanding achievements lately have been:

Olivia Anagnostou winning the 17 & Under Mininera & District League Best and Fairest (following on from her win in the League for 15 & U)

Jedah Huf and Arielle Dickeson also polled very well in this division.

Charlotte Millear winning the 15 & Under Mininera & District League Best and Fairest.

Alice Whitehead also polled very highly.  There were quite a lot of our students who polled very well for their respective teams in this division.

Life Membership:  Our very own Susie Holcombe was awarded a life membership to the South West District Football Netball League for her years of service and dedication to the League.  Susie is an amazingly worthy winner who thoroughly deserves this award.

Finals news:  A number of staff and students played in finals games in the South West Football Netball League recently.  Congratulations to them for making it through this far in the season and for their efforts with their teams.

Also, in the Mininera League, there will be a number of students playing for premierships this weekend.

Chloe Frost’s team (Glenthompson/Dunkeld) will play against Moyston/Willaura in the U13s. In the U15s, Emma Vallance and Charlotte Millear (Wickliffe/Lake Bolac) will be up against Hawkesdale/Macarthur. Rebecca Watt’s team (Penshurst)  will challenge for the C grade premiership. Jedah Huf (Penshurst) will be aiming to win B grade but will have to play off against Olivia Anagnostou, Arielle Dickeson and Mrs Couchman (Glenthompson/Dunkeld) in the Grand Final.

Finals are also underway in the Hampden League and I wish those students playing the very best.

College Basketball Annual Presentation Night

6pm, Thursday 5th December 2019

Early advice is provided for our inaugural College Basketball Annual Presentation Night to be held at 6pm on Thursday 5th December 2019, outside the MYPEC Building with awards to be presented at the Geoff Handbury Sports Centre following a BBQ Dinner. We are trying to keep the cost to - Families $20, Adults $10 and Students $5.

All players, coaches, team managers and families of all age groups are invited to attend.

It is an evening to bring together the College Basketball Community with an opportunity to celebrate and recognise the individual efforts of our basketball participants throughout 2019.

We are focusing on establishing a peak award named in honour of the late Dr David Baring. As has been recognised in earlier newsletters, David’s contribution to basketball at a club and association level in all areas of the game were well recognised and now greatly missed. It is only appropriate that we establish this award and award it for the first time this year. It is also anticipated that we will create 3 other awards for Male Player of the Year, Female Player of the Year and Coach of the Year. The criteria and process for each award is currently being developed but we expect that nominations would be called for early in Term 4 for each category. We would hope to build the presentation night in future years; however, it is important that we set the appropriate foundations, standards and processes in the first year of the awards.
