Hong Kong Turmoil and the Effect Upon a Boarder Away from Home

It has been a tough couple of months for students from Hong Kong as some of us see our hometown, Hong Kong, in disarray. We are reminded of those back at home amongst this torment every time we see the protests which have occurred every weekend make the headlines.  Since I have returned from my home city of Hong Kong last holidays I, at times, feel so terrible to be here and not supporting my family and friends in such desperate times. But the staff and boarders here in the boarding house have always been there for us, and when we are having trouble about issues like this, they are so understanding. It helps us a lot to relieve some of our stress and allow us not to be depressed about what his occurring at home when I have support here in the House. Thank you to my mates for helping me focus on other enjoyable things in our daily lives here in Hamilton.

VCE English Revision Forum #2

Our second VCE English forum has taken place this week in the Boarding House. This opportunity was open to all Year 12 students, of which 50 had taken up the offer. The group enjoyed a boarding dinner together and some casual conversation prior to the more serious event beginning at 7pm and concluding at 8:30pm. Both boarders and day-students welcomed the chance to once again listen to our English teachers and receive some timely advice regarding the novels studied and tips becoming an effective English exam reviser. Thank you Susan Bradbeer, Belinda Nichols and Nerrida Prosser for your time and dedication to our students.

Interview with a Boarder

Eli Hunter (Yr 7) resides from a dairy farm south of Penola, South Australia. Eli has been boarding full-time from mid-year and has enjoyed every moment of his time. I had the pleasure of interviewing Eli one evening in the boarding house this week.

Favourite part of boarding: All of the boys in Speirs House, and good view from room, watching footy at night with the boys and meeting new people like the casuals who come and stay.

Least favourite part of boarding: Eating vegies and leaving your smelly shoes in your room for the night.

Best meal: Pasta Bolognaise

Best room-mate: Byron McMahon

Eli is a wonderful Year 7 boarder who simply has taken to the Boarding House in such a positive and energetic way. He is cared for by the older boys in the House and is always going about his business in such a joyful way. Well done Eli for being the boarder of the week and leading the charge with your positivity.

Invitation to Stay a Night at the College Boarding House

One of the many amazing benefits of College is how closely the Junior School, Senior School and Boarding House work together to ensure we get to know the students personally and take a coordinated approach to help them achieve their best.

We are inviting students going into Year 7 in 2020 to stay a night in the Boarding House. There is a maximum of 10 spots available.

This opportunity is open to families who are considering boarding, even if it is a while down the track.

This one night stay is taking place on Wednesday 16 October. To ensure that students (and parents!) are comfortable with the Boarding House routine, we are holding a 45 minute information session and afternoon tea at 2.30pm on Wednesday 9 October.

If you are interested or would like to register your child for this exciting Boarding House experience, please contact Susie Holcombe, Registrar or Andrew Monk, Director of Boarding:

Susie – 03 5572 1355 or holcombes@hamiltoncollege.vic.edu.au

Andrew - 0407 052 214 or amonk@hamiltoncollege.vic.edu.au

This is a FREE trial and a great way for your family to get a feel for the Boarding House and everything it has to offer.
