MITS Info for Arlington Families

This year Preshil is fortunate to have the opportunity to become a partner school with  the Melbourne Indigenous Transition School (MITS) in Richmond.

Each year, indigenous boys and girls (around Year 7 age) go to live at the MITS boarding house in Richmond.  They attend school at the Richmond Football Club where they study an intensive curriculum that is focused on numeracy and literacy. At the end of their MITS year, students move into scholarship positions at  Melbourne partner schools.

The Year 8 children at the Secondary School and wider Preshil  community have warmly welcomed Marie and Kirsty Dumoo into the Year 8 cohort.

Kirsty and Marie are cousins from the community of Wadeye, which is situated on the western edge of the Daly River Reserve about 230km by air south-west of Darwin.

If you would like more information about this program, or would like to offer support to the girls or host families, please contact the MITS coordinator at the secondary school, beth.alvarez@preshil.vic.edu.au

Doo Dah

On the last day of Term, Thursday 29 March, Arlington will be celebrating with a Preshilian Doo Dah.

According to a reliable source, some parents decided to start cooking an al fresco meal for the children of Arlington at the end of each term. When Mug (Margaret E Lyttle) asked what was going on, one of the parents said “Oh it’s just a Doo Dah!”

The spirit of Doo Dah today remains the same. It is a delicious community meal of fresh food prepared, cooked and served to the children of Arlington on The Bricks by their mums, dads and carers. It is friendly, fun and relaxed: a great way to join in with the school community and get to know other parents/carers, and the children and teachers.

If you are able to volunteer on the day please notify your class rep, it"s a lovely opportunity to get to know other families and join us in the celebration of an exciting and busy term!
