Grade 5 Snapshot-Term 4

Week 1&2

Writing

During week 1 students have been learning how to incorporate figurative language into their writing to engage their readers. The focus for Week 1 was similes. Throughout the week students practiced creating similes about people, places and things using their five senses. They then wrote short stories and poems which incorporated these similes. During Week 2, students will learn how to create and incorporate metaphors into their writing. Our punctuation focus for Week 1 and 2

is speech marks. Students will complete a range of activities that will develop their understanding of punctuating speech.

Reading

Throughout Week 1, students have been exploring figurative language in their reading. They have developed an understanding of why great authors use figurative language purposefully in the books they write. Students compared similes and metaphors, then delved deeper into identifying similes in reading. They listened to music, movies and tv advertisements to see how similes are used around them and to support them in creating their own. Students also started a word study into the Morphology of words and their prefixes. This week, students will start to explore Metaphors in rich texts.

Maths

During Week 1, students learned about the relationship between fractions, decimals and percentages. Later in the week, students applied their learning of these topics when we began a new unit on Chance and Probability. They were able to use fractions to show the probability of events occurring.

This week, students will be continuing to explore both fractions and decimals and chance and data. They will be designing their own park using fractions, decimals and percentages.

Inquiry

Last week, students investigated influential Australians who have made significant achievements. They analysed and researched how these people and their achievements have had an impact on Australia. They used this information to create a timeline with visual elements and filmed a video to share what they had learnt with their peers. This week, students will be begin exploring Australian geography with an Indigenous perspective, to reflect on their own and other people's connection to land.
